The story is frankly unrealistic. If you want to add detail, dont put kitchey names in place of locations. You can imply that an area is poor besides noting the low quality materials they have. Life is not all about materialism. Some of your words do not mean what you think they do. Take another look at demeanor. It does not mean what a person looks like, it is how they carry themselves and their temperment. When you expose a character you can explain a background through details instead of just saying and this happened and then this happened. You can imply that the mother is gone through an empty chair, or a comment about the mother walking out. Keep these things in mind and your story would be much stronger.
