sad thing is that in reality people react that way to disappointment, especially now that the fuel economy is the way it is, people are like high tension wires..

However if you've been reading your UK news, you'll know that our lovely government has eased our burden by lowering fuel price by 1p per litre. Wow!

I'm getting two conflicting takes on this, and I'm not sure which of the two is meant here.
You could just be angry at the sky-rocketing (sort of) price of oil or the station and customers could be a metaphor for something bigger, and well, friendship-y. I liked the second one better.
