Is it sad that for some reason (GOD knows why!) I read Melodie and instantly thought back to the little mermaid 2? I have no idea why! And then that just got amplified when I read the "water polo" part. - A part from my random sidenote, I thought that this was great :) You said you had to write this based on a character you are creating. Does this mean there will be more with her as a character or did you just have to create a character?
