This. I have so many problems with this. What in the world is a female instinct? The socially constructed norm that women need to have long hair and wear makeup and like the color pink and be attracted to men?

Sexuality is so much more than "thick-headedness." It is at the core of someone's entire being. It doesn't change on a whim, and it certainly isn't inherently an explanation for poor grades as Karen's mother states it is. And, furthermore, as Karen was apparently threatened as a child and is deeply scarred by the event - and has given no indication that she actually received professional help regarding her anxiety - but her parents thought it would be a good idea to force her into living with boys makes the entirety of this piece unrealistic in the worst of ways.
