This is a great start. Your characterizations are lovely and shine through the dialogue. I know you said this is ahistorical, but the little details you include are very evocative and seem pretty believable to me, though I know little about the American civil war. Grey's thoughts are convincing for a boy of his background. Keep up the good work.

Okay. Yay! Chapter two! I'm not a fan of racism, but that never stopped me from reading a book before. I'm loving how this is going. I like Grey, he's got a bit of an attitude, which is crucial in a war plot. I'm mixed about Matthew, so far, I think he's cool.
