Its good but you drag on J.D's thoughts way too much and the reader starts loosing interest in the story.

Just a comment for now,
I've noticed you used the phrase "burning the midnight oil" several times already and you're only in the third chapter. A phrase like that can be used a couple of times maybe, but the repetition becomes obvious and unoriginal very quickly. Swap it out with something different a few times, and your writing will definitely improve.

I'm so excited to see where this story goes. I also can wit go check out some of your other stories!

Just so you know, I blame you for not doing any homework at all for the past two days. But honestly, I love the story. I can't wait to see what happens next! I did notice one thing though, when you changed Ethan's name from Matt you changed all the 'matters' to 'Ethaners' I was very confused until I figured it out.

I loved What to Do About Max and when I saw this I was super excited! I can't wait to see where this story goes!
