I think I see what you've accomplished here: If you still have a life to lead and you've entered the shadow-world, you can't be content there, because life in the real world is better; or at least, it overshadows any meaningful experiences within the shadow-world. If you've lost your life through some means, explainable or other, it matters not, since that life is over; you might as well spend your time in the shadow-world at that point.
I liked the story. I would say that the story could benefit with more details about the shadow-world in comparison to the real world, but it's enjoyable the way it is now. You write well. )
