I strongly disagree with flaws. Forced flaws come across obvious where the author uses made up terminology or doesn't know what he or she is talking about so it comes across as forced cliched moments where the OC can't help out.

I have no problems with *upsurping* as you put it if the character really is naturally just as good at a skill or better and it all flows together. Fake flaws are really glaring and as annoying as reality TV.

I hate it too but since the 90s the media has been pushing feminist crap everywhere because it ties into Agenda 21 forced centralized living. Look up Agenda 21 and you'll be amazed how close we are to most of the predictions being fulfilled.

I'm sorry, but I highly disagree with your assessment of Thor being or meant to be perfect. His body, his strength, his hair, those are perfect. But as made very clear (in the movies, at least), Thor is overly proud, boastful, and headstrong to the point where he acts without proper assessment of a situation, going so far as to spark a possible war between two worlds.

Even in the comics there have been points where he's shown as gullible too, but since we're talking the movies, we won't get into the comics.

While at the end of the first film he does learn from previous mistakes and becomes less of a brute, he still retains some pride and boastfulness. I still wouldn't call him perfect at all, he's flawed as well. Not as much as Loki, mind, but that's pretty much the traditional hero/villain dynamic. The villain needs to be more flawed in order to establish them as the villain.

I don't understand how in the first paragraph you can say that Thor was perfect, yet in the second paragraph you admit that he has faults. Which is it? He can't have both.

I couldn't agree more with you about Loki. I can't say I don't enjoy reading Loki/OC fanfictions, (even the ones where he falls in love with the girl like in the second chapter XD), because sometimes is just so ridiculously hilarious that makes my day. I've also read some well-writen, realistic and beautiful Loki fanfictions, however, those are commonly Loki/Sigyn (Canon wife) and not Loki/OC ...
I am currently writing a Loki/OC fanfiction and I'm trying to avoid cliché at any cost. I Love to read this opinions about Loki/OC because it gives me more dimension about what readers and authors are writing about.

Well put. I can't STAND it when Tenth Walkers are just Tag A Longs with nothing to add and you wonder what the purpose of the story was yet the story has 200 reviews with nobody even asking any questions.

Another thing I've notice is the more action scenes there are the less romance there is and the more romance there is the less action scenes there are. In the latter the author skims thru the action and makes a big deal over a 10 second kiss with Legolas as the OC goes into dream land.

I am socially awkward but tend to notice cliches most people do not.

Now one thing I'd like to see though is for a *self insert* have a MALE be dropped in as MALES will be more likely accepted and that allows for a new ballpark of writing opportunities.

One idea I have I think would be good is a young male pilot being *sucked* into Middle Earth via a surprie thunderstorm when flying is Cessna 172 in which he recovers from a stall but doesn't know he is in Middle Earth until he realizes he is lost and tries to communicate to the nearest ATC tower and finds none.
He will simply think his radio is broken and refer to his lessons on dealing with radio communication failure then sees a landmark that is NOT possible on Earth and gets confused.

Maybe flying over The White City in Minas tirith and is in awe at it then the fuel alarm telling him he is low beeps so he has to make the choice of either landing now on the Palantir fields or continuing to find a non existent airport risking a crash landing.

The guards at this stage notices the airplane as a strange metal contraption wondering how it can fly and is not sure if the object is a threat from Mordor as one of Saurons inventions or not.

At this point the engine decides to conk out giving a cough bang pop kind of noise then he has to steer is plane to the best spot to land using visual inspection.

The guards would be staring in shock seeing the plane come in much too fast but then do a controlled landing as the pilot keeps the plane nose up to slow the descent as the wind catches the propellers a bit.

I think the problem here is that you seem to be using the terms 'Great Britain' and 'United Kingdom' interchangeably and they're not.

Great Britain is an island which consists of England, Wales and Scotland.
United Kingdom is Great Britain Northern Ireland.
For completion purposes, I will add:
British Isles is Great Britain, Ireland (whole island), the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Whenever someone says the word 'Ireland' in England, it's generally assumed that they mean either the Republic of Ireland, or the Island as a whole. Northern Ireland is referred to explicitly as 'Northern Ireland'. As a result, if someone said "Irish Transfer Student" in England, it would be guessed that they were from the Republic of Ireland. Of course, Hogwarts is in Scotland and their word choice might be different, but most of the pupils are English.

That said, the lack of a magic school in RoI does make an Irish Transfer Student a near impossibility in canon (they technically could have transferred from Beaubatons or Durmstrang).

I personally hate Tenth Walker fics, but this is not a valid attack on them. What you've missed is that Elrond did not have his own way on who comprised the fellowship. Elrond didn't want Merry and Pippin to go with them (not the least because Pippin WAS still considered a child as hobbits measured it, as they don't come of age until their thirties) and had an argument with Gandalf over it, which Gandalf won.

In that moment, it became possible for Elrond to be overruled on other people in the fellowship as well. And what Elrond actually said before that was
"'And I will choose you companions to go with you, as far as they will or fortune allows. The number must be few, since your hope is in speed and secrecy. Had I a host of Elves in armour of the Elder Days, it would avail little, save to arouse the power of Mordor.

Yes you could say that it was important that the numbers match, but the impression I got was that that was Elrond being poetic. Oh, and he didn't say that in council either. He said that to Frodo when only the Hobbits, Aragorn and Gandalf were there. If Gildor or Gloin had particularly wanted someone included, he could have found himself forced to accept them as well.

A Hogwarts transfer student from Great Britain (or any of the United Kingdom come to that) does not make much sense.

I've never encountered a Japanese Hogwarts transfer student, but I imagine one written by anyone who isn't Japanese and had never seriously studied Japan would not be very good.

The funny thing about the Weasleys not being able to afford one is that it was actually brought up in the books themselves, with Charlie's penfriend.

You can say there was no need for warrior hobbits in The Shire at the start of Lord of the Rings, but not in the battle at the end. And the introduction does refer to "Hobbitry-in-arms" so they have the concept of warriors.
Also, The Shire does have bounders, though I concede that they hadn't needed to fight anything for several decades.

While it is true that these are stereotypical plots, i don't exactly like how you generalize fanfictions using them, and some of your comments can be seen as very offensive.
My main exemple would be how you said that having an older Stark sister wouldn't be interesting. Being a woman doesn't mean you have to coo at a baby, or cherish your younger siblings. I think an overlooked sibling would be pissed regardless of their gender, though it could be a major plot point too, what with how Maria Stark was -not- depicted.
Loki has become the ultimate Draco In Leather Pants of the Thor/Avengers fandom. It's truly sad... But i disagree on Thor being perfect. I love Thor's portrayal and personality, but he is despicable, as well as most Asgardians of this Marvel universe. Some of the greatesAvengers FFs I've readd tackle this issue.
As for the Female Warrior cliché, while i do believe you have a point with the confusion on "feminism", having the character rantisn't as bad an idea as you seem to think : many of us real persons vent out their anger this way, and a "Reason You Suck" trope can be incredibly effective and powerful used in FF. Reading about clearly misogynistic characters such as Aragorn or Gondorians getting their just dessert can be very satisfying.
I'm curious about your suggestions for a "Tenth Walker" plot. How would you proceed to change cannon (as in ten nazguls) without making the original character appear like a Mary Sue ?
