Honestly? I think this is actually quite a nice introduction to the characters, even without having read some of the other stuff (yet). You don’t push anything in the face of the reader, don’t make whatever is going on between them painfully obvious, and do a really good job of letting the characters speak for themselves. I really like the idea you’re portraying of Quan maybe having been perceived as the weaker of the two, and it works well to show just how far he’s been pushed to snap like he does. There’s an interesting dynamic between the two, even here, and it certainly gives a solid hook to make the reader carry on. Good stuff, nicely written. Keep it up.
