With Rose out of the picture, would either Kate and her husband confess either of their affairs with her to each other? Not likely.

[The wind shook the house, causing the door to slide open.] - The wind literally comes out of nowhere, so it's best to first explain the setting and situation so it doesn't feel random.
["Hey, long time, no see," the woman laughed.] - Laughed isn't a speech verb. To explain, you're not laughing out the dialogue.
["It's just that, well, uh, I didn't expect to see you, that's all," Kate stated,] - Don't use stated. It's not the same as 'said'.
