Well I wouldn't find it stupid, but I do like the various implications this story can start.

I don't know if this is someone looking back on a failed relationship ruined by sports, or if sports brought these people together, or if the relationship failed and someone beat the boyfriend up with a bat!

Still, reading the story over and over again with the various scenarios is a fun activity! Keep on writing! :)
