I like the background you've set up for the story so gar, with a family in the 1890s trying to settle in a new town after the death of the mother, and a seemingly ordinary yet unusual thing occurring which may the first sign of something haunting which might be going on later. I'd like to see what it is that makes this town seem peculiar, and more on any difficulties the family might still be facing.
