In your example it's helped that the characters are at an age where they should still be learning what is and isn't acceptable - a redemption in that instance is both believable and plausible. The problem is that 'forgiven' and 'forgotten' are not synonyms. A relationship that forms on shaky ground because one has a strong reason to distrust the other seems like it could be interesting but if people are skipping it in favour of just getting the two together then that's not good.

No, there would still be rules in an anti-matter universe too, and pretty similar ones at that as anti-matter is still physical particles behaving in a predictable way as lab tests have shown. As for the AUs, I totally agree with you on that.
