When used in place of a name, mom and dad should be capitalized.

Speech tags are stuff like 'said', 'asked', 'replied', etc. If something isn't a speech tag, it's treated as a separate sentence. This means that you end the dialogue with a period, because it's the end of that sentence.
I'm having a really hard time seeing Lacey as a competent person. She has to be a genius engineer in existance for her coworkers to consider her, but she doesn't really come off as one. She sounds like a teenager because she is and that's the problem. It feels like she needs to develop a bit more to work with others.
