"Hey Kevin! How ya doing?" Samantha said, greeting her friend cheerfully. She was really happy that day,the fourth day of Homecoming, and almost time for the big football game.

"Huh? Oh, hey Samantha."

"Well, someone got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Can't even give me a somewhat cheery greeting."

"Yeah, whatever."

Kevin slammed his locker closed and walked off. He didn't even say good bye to her. Samantha glared after him. What was up with Kevin? Why was he so mean and ignorant?

The bell rang, breaking up Samantha's thoughts. She hurried down the hall to her class.

The lunch bell rang, interrupting the boring lecture Samantha was sitting in. Her geometry teacher assigned their homework and dismissed them. As usual, Samantha was the first one out the door. She went to the usual table her friends sat at every day. She waited as her friends came in, all except Kevin. Samantha's best friend, Alyssa, waved to her.

"Hey Samantha, where's Kevin? He's usually here before the rest of us. Have you seen him? I'm a bit worried."

"I haven't seen him since before school. He seemed unusually quiet and grumpy. I wonder what's up with him? He wasn't like this yesterday. And he's never late to getting here for lunch."

"Oh, I do hope he comes soon. I want to check my homework with him. After all, we're in the same English class and I wasn't sure how to do the grammar section of our assignment."

Samantha's eyes skimmed the entire cafeteria. She spotted him, eating with some football players. She motioned for Alyssa to look in that direction. Alyssa's smiling face turned confused.

"Why do you think he's eating with the football players? I could understand that if it was me, since I'm a cheerleader. But why the football players?"

"I have no idea but I'm going to see why he's eating over there and why he was so grumpy this morning."

"I'll come with you."

Samantha and Alyssa made their way through the crowded cafeteria. They arrived at their destination. The football players greeted them and invited them to sit down. The girls accepted. Samantha took a seat next to Kevin. He looked down at his sandwich.

"Is everything okay, Kevin? You've been behaving unusually today."

Kevin smiled weakly at her. "It's nothing."

"Well, alright. I'll take your word for it. But if something's wrong, let me know. I'll try anything to help."

Kevin took a deep breath. He blushed as he looked at Samantha.

"Er...can I talk to you in private?"

Samantha nodded. They got up and went into a hallway, close to the cafeteria. They found an empty room. Kevin followed Samantha in, closing the door behind them.

"You already know that I'm a football player, right?"

"Yeah, Alyssa told me."

"Okay, well, I wanted to talk to you in private because what I'm going to say is kind of personal."

Samantha's heart pounded. She held her breath. What is he gonna tell me? Some weird guy thing?

"Okay, well...er...where to start? I'll just be straight forward with you. I...uh..."

Samantha breathed again. "Yes?"

"I...I love you." "You what?!" Samantha was taken aback.

"I love you."

"Really?" Kevin nodded as he leaned over and kissed Samantha on the lips. He put his arms around her and pulled her close to him. Samantha sat there, arms at her side. She had no idea that Kevin had feelings for her, nor the courage to even tell her. Kevin pulled away from her and turned red. Samantha couldn't speak.

"You'd probably be grossed out."

Samantha shook her head. "I'm not. Because...well...because..."

Samantha trailed off. But looking into Kevin's eyes gave her some courage.

"I love you, too."

Kevin grinned. They closed in on each other and shared a long, sweet kiss. Both of them pulled away abruptly when the bell rang.

"We better get to class," Kevin said, standing up.

"Yeah."

Holding hands, Kevin and Samantha walked out and back to the cafeteria to get their stuff. Alyssa shrieked when she saw them holding hands. Her eyes filled with tears.

"Oh Samantha! You're so lucky!" Alyssa whispered as she hugged her.

Samantha showered and changed into her pajamas. She hopped into bed but before turning off the lights, she took out her journal. Samantha reached for her pen and started writing.

Dear Diary,
I must be the luckiest girl in the world...or at least, for today. My crush actually likes me! He kissed me today, in an empty classroom. I was shocked. I had no idea that he liked me! My wishes came true! I love him!

Samantha finished up and put them away. She reached out and turned off the lights before curling up in bed.
