Blue & Black

Do you understand the tears I cry?
Do you know how life is so deceiving?
Do you ever look up at the sky
And understand that seeing isn't believing?
Do you ever swim through the black deepness,
Wondering what the slow river will bring?
Do you ever wonder if you'll keep this
Thinking you don't want to see the spring?

It's a lake of blue and black
Thick as my suffocating sadness
Pounds my heart with what I lack
Drags me slowly into madness…

Can you hear the far-off singing?
A slow and mournful tune they chant,
Can you see the thread to which I'm clinging?
Can you succeed to do what others can't?
Can you make me want to rise from the dark?
Can you tell me the beauty of the earth?
Can you sing the song of the joyful lark,
Can you describe the gift of birth?

It's a lake of blue and black
Thick as my suffocating sadness
Pounds my heart with what I lack
Drags me slowly into madness…

With my knees to my chin
The liquid fills my head
I want to give in
But I stay in place instead
I rock back and forth
Don't know what that will gain
I don't feel my life is worth
All the piercing, lasting pain…
You know that you must help me
But you're unsure how
Everything you say to me
Bounces back somehow
It seems no one can reach so deep to me,
And I don't want to come back now
No, I don't want to come back now

Can you hear me through the liquid's density
The way my silent soul cries to be heard?
Can you fix me with your love's full intensity
Though the beating of my heart is blurred?
Do you want me to come out into the open air?
Do you want me to begin with a new day?
Can you show me how much you really care?
Pull me out and tell me I am there to stay.

It's a lake of blue and black
Thick as my suffocating sadness
Pounds my heart with what I lack
Drags me slowly into madness…

The deep and dark patterns my heart has learned to trace…
Please, teach me how to want life's sweet embrace…
My prison of blue and black
Holding me in place
Don't let it wipe away my face
