Sweet Dreams (Yume Kokochiyoi): Angel
Author's Note: Well, here's the first chapter! It's not as action packed as the others will be. It mostly tells about the origin of it all. Also, I have been asked to set some special signs for scene changes so here goes!
*** : dreaming ---- : different day ~~~ : scene change Enjoy!
Year: 3082 "Hurry! Take her to Earth, where she will be safe! Take the boy too! Find them a family they can stay with, but make it in the same vicinity!"
"But what about you Mistress Suri?"
"I must stay and fight. It is my duty as queen."
"But you don't have to! You can come to Earth and be safe!"
"There is nowhere that is safe from the Arukeis! Now hurry, Sonyachun! You must get them to safety!" The four year old girl ran as fast as her little legs could carry her, holding two small babies in her arms. She raced to a nearby space capsule and climbed in. When she was safely inside, she locked the capsule up tight and mashed the "EJECT" button.
Year: 3098 "Kari! Come here!"
"Coming!"
"Hey! Take a look at this article on Takuya, you know the guy from SMAP!"
"Oh, I saw that one just a few days ago."
"Isn't he just the cutest, Kari?"
The young girl of 17 brushed back her long brown hair. "Well, I guess so. I'm not really boy-crazy like you, Yuri. Uh-oh! Got to go, or else I'll be late for Mr. Fujiyama's class!" The girl turned around and trotted to class. When she got there, she noticed that he was already starting to teach. She busted through the door with a few other stragglers and took her seat. Towards the middle of class, she started to doze off. She just couldn't keep her eyes open, so she let her head rest on top of her desk. "Just for a minute," she whispered to herself.
*** "Ahhhhh! No, stay away from me!"
"What happened?" Kari stood, stupefied, looking at the rubble around her. Buildings were demolished and people lay dead on the ground, some of their limbs missing.
"Please don't kill me!" Kari heard screams coming from every direction. Then she saw them. They were terrible creatures, larger than transport buses. She looked at them, a look of sheer terror on her face. She staggered back and fell to the ground. One of them started to advance on her. She backed away as best she could. "Please, no!" she whispered. All she could remember was feeling this cold rush over her, then..
*** "Kari? Kari? Are you okay?" She sat up. There were people standing all around her, staring at her.
"What..What happened?" Kari asked, rubbing her eyes.
"You fell out of your desk whispering 'Please, no!' in a scary voice! We didn't know what happened to you!" Yuri said, staring intently at Kari.
"There were monsters, as big as buses. They were destroying..destroying everything! And... they were killing people!"
"Come on, Kari. It's to the hospital wing for you. Sonya, you go with her," Mr. Fujiyama said, motioning towards a girl Kari had never noticed before.
The girl bent down, helped Kari up, and walked her out into the hall. "Hi, my name is Sonya," she said smiling at her.
"Uh - Hi. I'm Kari."
"Yes, I know. Well, I don't mean to be nosy, but what exactly did happen in your dream?"
"Oh, you're not being nosy. I'm glad to have someone listen to me! Well, it was weird. I was transported to a street. It looked kind of familiar, but it was half demolished. There were people screaming, 'Stay away from me!' and 'Please don't kill me!' I didn't know what was happening. Then I saw these monstrous creatures, about the size of transport buses! One advanced on me, and I fell to the ground whispering, 'Please, no!' Then I woke up on the floor of the classroom."
"What exactly did these monsters look like?" Sonya asked, eyeing Kari suspiciously.
Kari noticed for the first time that Sonya had a silver, metal necklace dangling from her neck, from which a red jewel shown brightly. "Well, they were different colours. The one who almost killed me was a reddish colour. It had long, slender body, with a hunched back. It's head was long and it had black slits for eyes. Its arms were almost as long as its body. On each hand it had razor-sharp claws. Then, that was all I could remember."
"Well, here's the nurse. I'll - see you around." Sonya walked out of the door leaving Kari with the nurse. Kari went straight home from the nurse's office.
---- Kari walked along the halls of her school the next day. People avoided getting to close to her, but she paid no notice. Taunts were thrown at her: "Hey, Kari! Did the monsters come again when you were sleeping?" and "Awwww! Is little Kari afraid of the monsters?" Suddenly, it was as if she had become a freak of nature or something.
"Yuri? Do you think I'm a freak?" Kari asked shifting in her lunch chair as people backed away from their table.
"Kari? Do you honestly think that I would? I mean come on!" Yuri said.
"Thanks, Yuri." She got up from the table and started to walk to her next class.
"Kari, going to have another seizure in class?" a girl snickered.
Kari felt hot tears run down her face. "Hey, shut up! Stop messing with her." A boy walked up and stood in front of Kari.
"Well, what do you know? One freak taking up for another!" The girl said. The boy slapped the girl hard across the face. The girl stood stunned.
"Yagami Konno! What in the world?" A teacher was standing down the hall from them. "What is the meaning of this?" He started towards Yagami, but he ran down the opposite end of the hall. She noticed that a silver bracelet jingled on his wrist as he ran. It had the same looking jewel that Sonya's had dangling from it.
It took her a while to notice that Sonya wasn't in school today.
~~~ "Yuri, you know that weird guy, Yagami?"
"Yeah, what about him?"
"Well - he stood up for me today and slapped Ayumi."
"He what?!?!" Yuri doubled over in laughter. "Oh my gosh! I wish I had been there to see that! What did she do?" Kari stood in silence on the neatly paved parking lot beside her school. "Well?" Yuri said, anticipating an answer.
"She just stood there, but that's not what concerns me. I don't know why Yagami did that."
"Well, maybe he has a crush on you or something!" Yuri said, still chuckling. Kari stood silent. Moments passed. "Kari, I don't know what's gotten in to you. Since that day in class, you haven't talked at all! Look Kari, I'm sure just about everyone falls out. It's natural!" Kari still stood silent. "Kari, if it's about your father, he'll be okay! He can fight this out! He's not going to let cancer get to him! "Well, I've got to go. I'll see you later." Yuri got into her car and sped off.
~~~ Ba-rrriiinnggg! Ba-rrriiinnggg! As Kari closed her front door, the telephone rang. "Hello?"
"Is this the Kari Su-ichi?"
"Yes."
"I'm calling from Hochibara Hospital." Kari's heart pounded as she heard these words. The woman's tone was solemn. "I don't know how to tell you this, but - your father has passed away. I'm sorry, there was nothing we could do." The woman on the phone paused.
"You - Go to hell!" She slammed down the receiver and sunk to the floor, tears splashing down her pale face. She sat there for an hour and cried, the sadness pouring in. She finally got up and moved to the couch. She flicked on the t.v. to the news channel.
"There has been a horrible car accident on Highway 13. Officials aren't sure what caused it. It was a red Caprice, year 3081." Kari's heart jumped at the words. Yuri was headed along the same highway in a red Caprice. The reporter continued. "The victim was sent to Hochibara Hospital." Kari rushed out the door and jumped into her car.
~~~ It wasn't long before she reached the reception desk at the hospital. "Yuri Chiyo, please," she panted.
"I'm sorry miss, I can't let you see her. She's in critical condition," the receptionist said.
"Just give me the room number!" Kari yelled.
"Um - all right. It's 113. But the doctor probably won't let you in!" Kari paid no heed to these words as she ran along the narrow corridor, doors flashing past her in a blaze.
She busted through the door just as a doctor was trying to enter. "Hey! You can't be in here!" he shouted.
"Get the hell away!" Kari yelled and slammed the door in his face. She rushed to the bed and bent down beside Yuri. "Oh gosh! Yuri!" She was badly hurt. Blood was gushing from large cuts on her body. Her body was bruised and the heart monitor ran slowly. It was only a matter of minutes.
"Kari! It's true! They're here!" Yuri struggled to say, blood trickling down from the corners of her mouth.
"Shhhhhh... It's okay! Who's here?" Kari panted.
"The - the monsters." Yuri's eyes rolled into the back of her head.
"Yuri, hold on! Hold on Yuri! Don't go, please!" BLEEEEEPPPP The heart monitor ran flat. Kari gripped Yuri's cold hand as the doctor rushed in.
"Miss, please let her go!" The doctor wrenched Kari's hand from Yuri's.
Kari slumped to the floor, her tears flowing.
"Miss, you must get up. You have been here almost half an hour. There was nothing we could do."
"Shut the hell up!!! That's what you said earlier!" Rage was building up inside of her. Suddenly a large gust of wind blew threw the room. Kari felt power she had never felt before. A green light shot out from her fingers. Her back suddenly ached. It felt as if someone had stuck two knives on each side of her back and slit it. The nurse looked on in horror as Kari transformed. Wings sprouted from the slits that had hurt her. A blinding light filled the room. The nurse was knocked to the floor, dead. Then, it was as if the power was drained from her. Kari felt her wings painfully retreating inside her body. She staggered back in pain as they finally were all the way in. A doctor rushed in and looked from Kari to the dead nurse. "What the hell -?"
"I'm sorry, there was nothing I could do." Kari rushed out of the room. She didn't know if she felt angry or pleased. It was more like both. She rushed to her car, threw open the door and climbed inside. She sat in silent tears, unable to do anything. All this had happened to her in one day. She placed her head on the steering wheel as tears splattered against it. "Kari? Are you okay?" She lifted her head from the steering wheel. Yagami was standing over her. "Come on, I'll drive you home." He led her over to the passenger side and helped her in. He then walked around and started up her engine. It was 8:30 p.m. He drove off towards her house.
"How did you know I was in here?" Kari asked, just really waking up.
"Oh, I see you're awake. Well, I was jogging and I saw you with your head against the steering wheel. I didn't know who it was at first. Then I saw that you were asleep."
"Where are we going?" Kari asked, her voice sounding weary.
"I'm taking you home."
"Oh, okay." With that she rolled over in her seat and went back to sleep.
~~~ "Thank you for helping me." Kari had invited Yagami in when they got to her house. "But, I can't help asking. How did you know where I live?" Yagami paused, trying to find the right words. He hadn't thought that this would come. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to put you on the spot like that," she apologized.
"That's okay. I'm not very good under direct questions."
"Oh well, I was going to ask you something, but -" she paused. "Why did you help me today?"
"Well - Because I wanted to protect you. I mean - I mean, you didn't really stand up for yourself. I just thought that - that you needed someone to help you."
"That's sweet of you, after all I've been through today. I don't know why I haven't gone crazy by now."
"Well, I'd better go. I still have a little homework." Yagami headed toward the door. "Kari, I wouldn't come to school tomorrow if I were you. You need to rest all day."
"Wait!" Kari stopped him as he was just walking out of the door. She threw herself into his arms and hugged, tears streaming down her face.
Yagami placed his hands on her back to comfort her. "It's okay." He held her tight and let her cry. Finally, she removed herself from him and bid him good night. He walked out the door and left her alone. She went silently upstairs to her bedroom and fell on top of the bed, thinking about nothing but dreamless sleep.
---- She awoke the next day. She sat up and looked around her room. It took her a while to remember the events that had taken place the previous day: Her father and best friend gone in one day. How she had accidentally killed the nurse. But most of all, the way she felt when being held by Yagami. She had always thought of him as this quiet, passive person. But she guessed she was wrong. She got up and took her long, hot shower. It seemed as if she washed all her troubles away from her when she was in there. As she stepped out, she don't know why, but Yuri's last words haunted her. 'They're here! The - the monsters!' The moment kept playing back in her head and she quickly dressed. She headed downstairs and felt a wave of sadness wash over her. She stared at the place where her father used to sit. But now, he would sit there never again. She sat in silence, thinking about what she was going to do. She went over to the t.v. and clicked it on. It was still on the news channel. She rolled over on the couch and immediately fell asleep.
She awoke to the sounds of the blaring t.v. She rubbed her eyes and stared at the screen. "Oh my gosh!" she stared at a picture of a person impaled on a metal spike. A puddle of blood sat beneath the dead person. Her hand was clasped across her face as she saw an even more gruesome picture. It was half of a human. It still had one arm intact. Pieces of it's lower half were strewn across the pavement.
"I am here with special correspondent: Miho Noyo. What should our people do?" Suddenly the t.v. went black.
BABBBOOOOMMM!!!! There was a large crash outside the house. It shook it violently. Kari ran to the window and looked out. She gasped. It was the monster, the same monster she had seen in her dream. Or was it a dream? She ran outside into the cold air. 'That Sonya girl had seemed so interested in these creatures. I wonder if she knows anything about them' Kari thought, staring determinedly at the creature. Normally she would have run away like everyone else, but she stayed still, hating this creature that had caused so much pain. "Stop it!" she yelled at the creature.
The creature turned to her. It was like a silent spectre. It stared at her through the slits of eyes. "You! The princess! You must die!" Its voice was raspy and high.
"Stay away from her! Stay away or I'll kill you!" Yagami ran up behind her, his fists out held.
"Both of you! You are of the Angels too!" The creature staggered back for a moment and stared at them. Then he leapt at them, his razor-sharp claws extended.
Yagami started to run at it, but Kari held him back. Yagami stared at her in surprise. "What are you doing, Kari?" he shouted at Kari over the roar of the creature.
"I want to do this!" she shouted her eyes burning a pale blue. Suddenly, the green light filled the air again. The pain in her back came back, but it wasn't as bad as last time. The wings extended slowly.
Yagami stared in amazement. "She has harnessed her power already?"
When her wings were fully extended, she raised her right arm. "Ahhhh!" A blue blast emitted from her hands. It headed for the monster. It connected with its torso. There was a deafening scream as the creature was ripped apart, blood splattering everywhere. Kari's wings folded back into her back and she fell to her knees. Yagami ran over to her and picked her up. "What was that?" she whispered.
"Don't worry. I'll explain it all soon." He carried her back to the house as the sun cast a pinkish glow to the sky around it.
