What is a Friend?

A friend is someone who will defend you at the slightest attack,

A friend is someone who will teach you over and over, no matter how difficult it is for you to learn,

A friend is someone who will help you do things you're afraid to do,

A friend is someone who shuts you up before you say things you'll regret,

A friend is someone whose views conflict with yours, but it doesn't matter,

A friend is someone who lets you play no matter your skill

A friend is someone who makes you laugh with one word,

Someone who knows your secrets,

Someone who you call when you're crying or hurt,

Someone who lets you rant

Someone who makes life livable

Someone who will tell you, time after time, that you really aren't stupid

Someone who cares when you are upset

Someone. . .

I never had friend before,

I always thought they were so much more,

I thought I was a crazy, a dreamer so to speak,

I only friends who had claws or a beak,

But now you have shown me that friends can be true.

I know where you are in this poem, do you?

A friend is someone you never need to be shy around,

A friend is someone who really is laughing with you,

A friend is someone who you need never feel shame around,

A friend is someone you can trust with anything,

A friend knows what you refer to cryptically.

Someone taught all this to me,

Taught me how a friend to be,

Now I pass this on for best,

Because, you see, I pass the test,

I can learn to get along,

There are others who to my tune put a song,

There are some, and they know who they are,

Who just stand out, and shine like a star.

This poem is for my friends. You know who you are. Find yourselves in the poem, I promise you're there. Perhaps I'll write a chapter for each of you, but for now. . .I just want you to know.
