{{{ Prologue }}}
I remember the first time I met him. The man who bothers me so. The man who invades my thoughts at night, while I am trying to get to sleep. He confuses me, he exhilarates me, he scares me and he makes me feel so… good.
"I know I'm a confused little girl… and I know I need therapy."
Laughing lightly to myself, I thought, 'they say the first sign of madness is talking to yourself.' In the first 22 years of my life I don't think I ever spoke to myself. And I never questioned my sanity. However, in the last 6 months, since I met him, I've done both. Repeatedly.
Haplo…
~memory~ [this is supposed to be in italics… but I can't work out how to get the bloody things to work]
Standing in the cool night air, atop my building, I was not expecting company. I enjoyed my little time alone from the world. Away from the pressures, away from the people, the prying eyes. The pain, away from all the world's pain. No one could see me, a single figure standing on the roof of a large building.
No one expect Haplo, apparently.
I felt his presence, a little annoyed perhaps, I spun around to face him. My eyes travelled quickly from his head to his toes and back again. Gorgeous. "What are you doing here?" I had asked him.
"I saw you standing here, so I thought I might come and join you." He answered.
"What?" I asked a little annoyed. And truth be told perhaps a little surprised that he'd seen me. "Did I look like I needed rescuing or something. Did I have a sign around my neck saying 'I'm alone, come be with me'? I think not."
Laughing lightly, he came to stand beside me, near the edge of the building. "No. But I noticed that you come here often, almost every night, and I wondered what was so good. Standing here, I understand."
"It's a beautiful view."
"That's not the only reason you come here."
"No… no it's not."
"It's your sanctuary right… away from your friends, people you know."
Amazed at how close he was to the truth, and how much he seemed to know me, I nodded slightly to acknowledge him. "So, what do you do?" I had asked, changing the subject.
"What do I do?" He asked, a little confused. "Not what am I?"
"Yes… well, you're a vampire, that's obvious. So what do you do? Do you have a job? Or do you just wander the night?"
He was floored. Absolutely amazed at me. "How… how did you know I was a vampire?"
"I know these things."
"Riiiight." He said, drawing the word out slowly. "Sure. And why aren't you running scared."
"You didn't come up here to hurt me. You came here for company."
"Well yes…"
"So… what do you do?" I asked again.
"Nothing… and everything. What ever I feel like. At the moment I have a job at a computer technology company. And I work as a medical assistant in the hospital."
"You have two jobs? How's that possible. Can't you only work at night?"
"It's complicated." Came his reply. He wasn't going to say anymore on that subject at that time. "So what's your name?"
"Cacia. Yours?"
"My name is Haplo…"
"Doesn't that mean single… or alone?"
"Aye… that is does. Can you think of a more fitting name for a vampire that walks the world of the living?"
~end memory~
That was our first meeting. Though certainly not our last. Over the next few months, he often visited me on my roof.
