~*~Two days past eighteen
He was waiting for the bus in his army green
Sat down in a booth in a cafe there
Gave his order to a girl with a bow in her hair
He's a little shy so she gives him a smile
And he said would you mind sittin' down for a while
And talking to me,
I'm feeling a little low
She said I'm off in an hour and I know where we can go ~*~
A man of barely 18 sat down in a local café, and ran a hand through his wild brown hair. He placed his order with a pretty girl of around 16 with a white bow in her red hair. He couldn't look her in the eye, guessing he was shy she smiled at him.
"Would you mind sitting down and talking to me? I'm feeling down, and it would be great to talk to someone."
"I'm off work soon, give me time, and I know of this place we can go." She grabbed her coat and they head out.
~*~So they went down and they sat on the pier
He said I bet you got a boyfriend but I don't care
I got no one to send a letter to
Would you mind if I sent one back here to you~*~
They sat down under a tree, it's leaves falling down and danced in the wind. The wind pulled at her hair, playing with it.
"I bet someone like you has a boyfriend but I don't care, I'm off to war, and I have no wife or girlfriend, so I hope you don't mind if I write to you." She shook her head, and smiled back at him. "I'd be honored if you wrote to me."
~*~I cried
Never gonna hold the hand of another guy
Too young for him they told her
Waitin' for the love of a travelin' soldier
Over love will never end
Waitin' for the soldier to come back again
Never more to be alone when the letter said
A soldier's coming home~*~
"You're to young for him, he probably isn't even coming back!" her friends tried to reason with her...yet she waited for a letter saying he was returning.
~*~So the letters came from an army camp
In California then Vietnam
And he told her of his heart
It might be love and all of the things he was so scared of
He said when it's getting kinda rough over here
I think of that day sittin' down at the pier
And I close my eyes and see your pretty smile
Don't worry but I won't be able to write for awhile~*~
It's rough over here, and things aren't easy, I won't write for a while, don't worry. I'm scared I might not make, I'm trying, but like I said, things aren't easy. When I get scared, I think of you, and that day under the tree, how the wind played with your hair, and your smile." She wiped tears away and smile slightly, but fear gripped her heart, somewhere, she knew he wasn't coming back...
~*~One Friday night at a football game
The Lord's Prayer said and the Anthem sang
A man said folks would you bow your heads
For a list of local Vietnam dead
Crying all alone under the stands
Was a piccolo player in the marching band
And one name read and nobody really cared
But a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair~*~
A few months later, at a football game, the announcer called the names of the fallen. As they called his name, sick feeling fell over her like a blanket, while no one seem to care, she took out her red bow, and replaced it with a black one, and let the red ribbon fly away into the night sky...
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Does anyone know why she replaced the red ribbon with the black? Any guesses? Huh? Huh? See yaz!
