This I Believe

* * * * * * * * * * * * A/N: I first came across a book called "This I Believe", edited by John Marsden, in my dad's bookcase about a year ago. In this book, 100 eminent Australians have each written a 600 words essay on their beliefs. The youngest contributor to the book was 14, the oldest over 80. Both males and females, homosexuals and heterosexuals, adults and adolescents contributed to this book. It did not discriminate by race, colour, religion nor political stance. It celebrated the diversity of belief within society. This is my version of "This I Believe", my affirmation, my declaration of independence, my constitution, it's whatever you want to call it. This is what I believe.

I believe I am lost in a search for life. But wandering and wondering a little often helps you find yourself.

I believe I am waiting to grow up, even though I despise the notion.

I believe we can learn something from every human being on this planet (even George W Bush).

I believe Good Charlotte, Linkin Park, The Eurhythmics, U2, Blessid Union of Souls and Pink Floyd are the greatest bands of all time.

I believe Avril Lavigne is better than Elvis any day.

I believe in and live by one Rule: there are no rules.

I believe that John Howard has done nothing for Australia, if he had the consequences would be devastating.

I believe that there is no right or wrong. Yin and Yang are rarely black and white.

I believe no human being has the right to judge another.

I believe in Allah, I believe in Yahweh, I believe in God. I believe everyone who believes in a God believes in the same One God, who is eternally loving, forgiving, and all powerful.

I believe Allah didn't call for Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida to fly those planes into the World Trade Centres and the Pentagon. I believe they're just using my God as an excuse to justify the mass murder of innocents. I believe that's wrong. But I also believe that is just my belief. The conviction of one person out of a global population of over 6.7 billion. I believe al-Qaida and bin Laden believe different things. I may not agree with their beliefs, but I respect them. They've never asked me to conform to their way of life and likewise, I am not going to ask them to conform to mine. And I'm certainly not going to kill them because of their beliefs, because I believe that makes me as low as I believe them to be.

I believe in No Boundaries, Exceeding Limits, Breaking Rules and Screwing Restrictions.

I believe in liberty.

I believe the words mainstream, normal, alternative and weird mean absolutely nothing. Each human being is an individual, especially identical twins regardless of their genetic profile.

In a quote from John Casimir's contribution to the book 'This I Believe', "I believe in original sin, but if you can't find one that's original, borrow a good one."

I believe if it's been done before, why do it?

I believe Cyndi Lauper was (and still is) 100 times better than Madonna (even though I wasn't born in 1986).

I believe I'm 500 years old, all this wisdom is just trapped in a 13-year- olds body.

I believe Star Wars is the most introspective and intelligent fictional tale ever created.

I believe in the healing power of tears. Crying makes the world a better place.

I believe in the intelligence and stupidity of the human race.

I believe getting caught in the rain is cleansing to the soul.

I believe emotions are like colours, I like the flamboyant ones.

I believe bad experiences are better than good ones.

I believe the Spring is always preceded by the Winter.

I've said it a million times and I'm going to say it again, I believe the light at the end of the tunnel is probably an oncoming train.

I believe in the shadows, because they dispel the curse of first impressions.

I believe in gut instinct.

I believe the world is paradoxical. I've been told to let go, but I've been told to hold on

I believe in signs.

I believe in equality of the sexes but as a woman, I am inclined to side with the female, except in the family court, in which case I'm more likely to side with the father, because when it comes to the custody of their kids, men have it hard.

I believe I am a hypocrite.

I believe if you accept what you cannot change some things will never change. These things are usually bad. The good things however, usually do change.

I believe the foregoing is contradictory to my belief that there is no right or wrong, no good or bad.

I believe I'm ready to leave home, see the world, to love and to be loved, to be heartbroken, to struggle and to succeed. I believe I'm ready for anything, so life can hit me with it's best shot.

I believe in no regrets. I look back at some things I've done (and written) and they make me cringe, but it's great to laugh at how young I was.

I believe in love. but I don't know what it is exactly.

I believe in life, therefore I also believe in death. Whether there's a life after death or not, I don't care. The End doesn't seem all that bad, I just think of it as the Eternal Sleep-In.

I believe I'm not ready to die. I have a lot to offer this world yet.

I believe intelligence is a curse.

I believe in miracles.

I believe the game Monopoly is against me.

I believe I have exceeded the 600-word limit.
