Ch. 1 "Devin!, Hurry up or we'll be late for the game!" Devin's mom yelled up the stairs to her daughter. "I'm coming!" Devin replied, as she appeared at the top of the stairs in her red and white cheerleading uniform. She ran down the stairs, her light brown hair bouncing around her face. When they got to the game, Devin ran out onto the field. She was late. "Devin...."Her coach, Kelly said with an angry tone in her voice. "I know, I know...I'm sorry" Devin replied, sitting down to stretch. Devin's friend Bridgett came over and sat down next to her. "Hey Dev" She said. "Hey" Devin replied. "Put your hair up" Kelly said as she walked past Devin and Bridgett. Devin glared as her coach walked away. "Put your hair up" Devin said, mocking her coach. She quickly pulled her long brown hair back in to a ponytail. "Come on girls, its time for the game." With that the 13 girls got up and took their places for the game.

"Hey, the Lions are back to take.... the win" They chanted on the field during half time. "We will rock you until the very end. So come on fans lets here you yell SHS Lions! Come on SHS Lions!" Tina clapped while they got in a new formation for stunts. "You think were done, you better think again," They shouted as they put up two torches without a flaw. "We are the Lions and we intend to win." They cradled the stunts and ran off the field for the next team to come on. When the next team finished Devin, ran to the sidelines to look for someone. "Where is he?..." She wondered. "He said he was coming...." Devin spotted her mom and her step dad in the stands. Scanning the crowd one more time without a glimpse of him, she gave up on the fact that her older brother who she hadn't seen in 2 years was coming. Her coach announced that half time was over so she got back in formation.

"Set!" Devin called. "Boom Boom Check" She said. The cheer started. "Boom boom check-check check us out a boom-boom check-check check us out Hey Lions yea busting out in the red and white and we say A boom -boom check-check check us out a boom-boom check-check check us out" they repeated it, cheering on their team. Devin's heart wasn't in it. She had started cheerleading two years ago because her mom though it would be good for her. It was right after her parents had gotten divorced. Devin hated it at first. She was very shy, not wanting to do anything, and not thinking she could. By the time her first year was over she had gotten used to it and had decided to go back. The second year was much better. She met her friend Bridgett that year and their team soared to victory. It was now her third year, but it seemed like more a routine procedure than having fun, though she really didn't notice anything wrong yet. The Lions won the game and Devin ran out on the field with her team. The game was over, and Devin and Bridgett walked off the field together. They were going to change and go to the mall for a while. Devin's life was actually very different than you would have thought. Though she was a cheerleader, she did not act like it outside of cheerleading. Her and Bridgett walked the mall. Bridgett was talking but Devin wasn't really listening. She was tired; not exactly tired as in sleepy but tired of...something. She brushed these thoughts passed her and concentrated on what Bridgett was saying. "And like he came right up to me and he said... 'Hey...'" Bridgett said, finishing. Devin let out a small laugh and then so did Bridgett. Bridgett was of course talking about Alex Thompson, who was without a doubt the most popular guy in their high school. Devin didn't like him though.

They were walking past the food court when Devin spotted someone. "...Donovan" she said in her head. She stopped walking and Bridgett continued on, barley noticing her friend's departure. "Devin?..." Bridgett said, turning around to her friend. "What is it" She looked in the direction Devin was staring and saw it. "Devin...its just Donovan Riley and his stupid friends" Bridgett said, pulling Devin out of her thoughts. Just then Donovan looked up and caught Devin's gaze. Devin quickly looked away and started walking again with Bridgett. An hour later they were both outside waiting for Devin's mom to pick them up. After her mom came they dropped Bridgett off at her house and then headed back to their house. Devin was lost in thought and wanted desperately to be in the confines or her own room. She didn't know why she was thinking what she was. She wanted to know what it meant. She wanted to know why she couldn't get Donovan Riley out of her head.
