Yume Kokochiyoi II: Premonitions
Author's Note:
"I do."
"And do you, Yagami Konno, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"
"I do."
"Then you may kiss your bride."
Yagami leaned over and kissed her, long and sweet. Kari was savoring the last moment as a single person, but was ready to begin her life with Yagami. "I now present you, Mr. and Mrs. Yagami Konno!" There was a burst of applause as the walked slowly, but surely down the aisle.
The snow fell swiftly outside as the Christmas lights danced around the church building. Outside, a man stood staring into the window, his black trench coat flapping in the wind. A large, black hat covered his face. He threw down a cigarette, stomped on it, and then walked off. Kari looked out the window just in time to catch a good glimpse of the guy. A chill ran down her spine.
~~~ "Kari! You look simply dazzling!" one of her college friends gasped. They walked towards the reception hall, hand-in-hand. There was scattered applause as they entered the room and took a seat in front of the large cake.
Kari had gotten one of her close friends to walk her down the aisle. She now spoke to him quickly. "And you got all of the travel stuff?"
"Yep! You're both ready for a good honeymoon in America!"
"Thanks! I owe you much, Kai!" She turned to her husband and kissed him gently. He returned it, and then the announcements were said.
"This beautiful couple will be spending two weeks in snowy Portland Maine!" Kai said as the audience 'ohhhhhhhed' and 'ahhhhhhhhed'.
*** Suddenly, she felt dizzy and the audience's voices were drowned out of Kari's head. For seconds, she could hear nothing, but then came the sound of a flute. It sounded so far away. She tried to concentrate on the tune. It was slow and melancholy. She had never heard it before. She stood, in her vision, surrounded by darkness. Then, she saw snow swirling around her. She shivered, for she found that she was wearing only a silken cloth, the cloth that covered her as an Angel. Then a dark figure appeared. in the shadows of tall pine trees. It looked her way, growled, and leapt at her. She screamed and blacked out. ***
"Honey! Honey! Are you all right?" Yagami had a panicky note to his voice.
Kari slowly opened her eyes and stared at the faces standing over here. There was Yagami, Kai, and some of her other friends. There was a murmur filling the whole reception hall. "What - Oh, yes. I'm all right. It was just a spell." She stood up, swaying like a drunk.
"Sit down honey." Yagami led her over to a seat and placed her there. "Now, are you sure you're okay?" he asked again.
She was comforted by his voice. "Yes, I'm okay." She kissed him, and the party resumed. However, people kept glancing over at her, making sure she wasn't going to fall out again. "Honey, I'm going to the restroom," she said. She got up and walked towards the restroom door. Upon being inside, she locked herself into a large stall and cried. 'Freak, scaredy-cat, weirdo.' She had all been called those names before. Now it had happened again. She had fallen out another time. It had been almost two or three years since her last one. That time it was at school, were everyone could call her names and laugh at her. Would they do the same now? Would they laugh at her again? She didn't know, and didn't want to know. Her thoughts jumped back to the mysterious figure and the melancholy tune from the flute. Who was playing it? What was that shadow? It gave her a strange and almost eerie feeling just looking at it. "Remember Kari! You're married now. You can't worry about these things anymore!" she told herself, making her feel somewhat reposed. She unlocked the stall and returned to the reception.
~~~ "Yagami, do you ever think about Sonya being able to come to our wedding and seeing us marry? Do you ever miss her?"
"Of course I do!"
"Well, what about that fall out I had? Do you think that had anything to do with her?"
Yagami put a finger up to her lips to quiet her. "Don't worry about that. We have a honeymoon to get to tomorrow!" He smiled at her and placed his head on the pillow beside her.
---- They awoke the next day, tired and worn from the long night. They packed up their suitcases and headed out the door. They had moved to a different house as soon as they had gotten enough money. The old one held too many memories. Now they crossed the lawn to the green car parked in the garage, loaded their luggage up, and started towards the airport.
~~~ "Passengers, buckle your seatbelts. Prepare for takeoff." The intercom cut off and Yagami and Kari quickly fastened their seatbelts. Neither one had ever been on a plane before. They braced themselves as it took off.
After a few hours, the flight stewardess came by with a cart of food and drinks. "Sir, would you like anything off the cart?"
"No." he replied curtly.
Kari looked over the seat, trying to get a better look at what the cart had. Then she gasped and clutched her forehead. That man, the man the stewardess was talking to. He was wearing a black trench coat and a large black hat. It was the same man she had seen outside the church the previous night! He saw her and she quickly turned around. She was taking deep breaths now. Yagami slept soundly beside her. She couldn't get that man's face out of her head. She fumbled around for her Tylenol bottle, found it, and shook a pill out. She hastily shoved it in her mouth and downed the rest of her drink. After a few minutes, she was slipping away into slumber. The pill's effects had taken place.
*** She found herself walking down an aisle in a large church. The church looked old and grey. It had been worn and deserted. A cold breeze blew in from the many broken windows. The place gave her the creeps. She saw a large wooden door at the front of the church. It was chipped and snow filtered through the cracks. She started to quickly walk towards the door, but no matter how close she thought she was getting to it, it always seemed farther away. As she was running, she felt her foot sink into warm liquid. She looked down and screamed. Her foot was covered in a pool of blood. And next to the blood was a carcass. It was clothed in a bloodstained, black trench coat. Its face was twisted into a contortion of fear and pain. Some of its flesh was scattered about the stone floor. She started to cry, turned around and ran back towards the door. She was terrified.
Then she heard a low growl. It was faint, but loud enough to know something was there. She began panicking and darted behind a molding statue of a shepherd. She sat there for second. Heavy breathing. Growling noises. They were there again. Then a drop of blood splashed against her shoulder. She looked above her. The shepherd staff's tip had been broken off to make a jagged spike. And impaled on that spike was a second man. He, too, was covered in black garments. He, too, had a look of fear on his face. She looked on in horror, and finally screwed up enough courage to run. Heavy breathing. Growling, growling, growling. It got ever closer, ever nearer. The screaming, the breathing, the growling. Then something leapt at her from the shadows. It was a wolf, but not a regular one. It was large, huge! The next thing Kari knew, she was being dragged across the cold stone floor, a trail of blood coming from her body. Screaming, heavy breathing, growling. Screaming, breathing, growling. Screaming, breathing, gro - ***
She awoke with a startle. Hopefully she hadn't cried out in her sleep. She looked around to see if anyone was looking peculiarly at her. No one. Then she noticed that the man was gone. 'Could it be a premonition?' she asked herself. 'Could that have been the man in my dream? If so, who was the other man? And what - what was that creature?' She was scared now. Never had she had premonitions or dreams like this. She tried to interest herself in a movie called "Nightmare" but that didn't help at all.
~~~ Yagami had finally woken up and they were only an hour away from the Portland airport. Kari looked over her seat again and the man was there now. He was rolling something around in his hands. It looked like a canister or something. Kari started worrying again. "Honey, that man back there. He's got something"
"What man?" Yagami asked, looking around.
"That man in the black. He's got a small canister or something. You don't think its dangerous do you?" Kari had a wavering note to her voice.
"Oh, Kari, don't worry about it." He paused for a second then continued. "You have been acting very strange since your fallout. Is there something you need to tell me?"
Kari looked at him wearily. "No, I don't think so." Then something flashed before her eyes. It was the picture of a heavily clothed woman. Her white hair blew in the snowy wind. Then she turned to face Kari. She gasped. The woman's eyes were so shockingly green, just like hers. She looked like someone she remembered. Someone from a memory not forgotten.
"Kari?" Yagami shook her out of the vision. "What's the matter? Tell me."
"I - I don't know." She just started to cry. It was all so confusing, and to add to it, she was scared.
Yagami ran his hand through her brown, silky hair. "It's alright. You're going to be okay. I love you."
"I love you too," she said through sobs.
~~~ "We have now arrived in Portland, Maine. I hope you enjoyed your flight. Thank you for choosing International Airlines." The intercom shut off and there was a hustle to get luggage out. Then, PSSSSSSSSSS.
People started falling down. Kari, realizing what was happening, grabbed their luggage and pulled Yagami towards the exit. Then she saw something that made her blood run cold. The man dressed in black was heading towards them through the gas, a small mask covering his mouth. Kari stood fixed to the spot. It was him, the man. Who was he? What was he chasing them for? She soon noticed that the gas was taking effect on her and Yagami. But she had to get out before it did damage! Why didn't the captains come out? Did they not know what was happening? She couldn't think about any of that now, she had to get away.
She felt Yagami hustling her along. They were nearing the exit. She looked behind her and she saw the man advancing on them. She felt extra weight pull on her. Yagami had almost passed out, but was still hanging on. They got to the door and stumbled out. They had only gotten a few feet away from the plane when Yagami fell out. The man came ever closer to them.
Then, the captains busted through the cockpit door and ran out the exit, trying to catch the man before he escaped. But their attempts failed. As they were about to reach him, he jumped high into the air and landed on top of the plane. He turned around, taking one last look and Kari and Yagami, and then fled. The captains tried to chase after him, but were easily beaten.
Kari's eyes began to fog up. Her head fell to Yagami's chest and she quietly slipped into unconsciousness.
