"You do know he's gay right?" Justin grinned at me like I needed to
be slapped. Sometimes that boy was just too blunt. I mean, he was nice,
well for someone with an ego like his at least. He kind of looked like a
backstreet boy and had the popularity to go with it. We weren't really
friends, but since we worked together, and sat together in two of our
classes, we pretty much had to get along for the sake of everyone else.
"Who?" I asked, furrowing my brows, my glasses slid half way down my nose at this and I pushed them back up before looking over at him. His smile grew wider, perfectly straight pearly white teeth showing...I hated him. He was beautiful, in a masculine sort of way, and it was the only reason anyone liked him. I hated people like that.
"Robin." He bobbed his head and his grin seemed to get wider. "You know the new guy at Hex. The one you seemed to be getting a long quite well with..." Hex. was short for The Hexagon, the place where I worked. It was in our mall, and it was sort of an alternative style store, we sold stuff like Band Tees, Hair Dye, some funky jewlery, a lot of stuff with spikes on it...you know...the kind of store for 'Goths' as most of the people here call it. It really isn't that bad though. It's neat hanging around there...really there is a lot of interesting stuff you come across and people too. We had just gotten a new employee after Jemma quit, his name was Robin.
"Uhm, okay?" I wanted to scoff at him but refrained myself. So? Who cares if Robin was gay? I had other Gay friends...there Was Coby, who also worked at the Hex till he was fired, and then there was Lori, well she was bisexual, and then Conner, he was bisexual too. I hated when people were so closed minded towards homosexuality. Gays were people too, and from hanging out with a bunch (My Gay friends had Gay friends...we all go out together a lot.) they were usually a lot more fun, anything but boring. At least the one's that I had known. "How do you know anyways?"
"He used to date Coby...or something." Justin wrinkled his nose. "Well all I know is that's how he got the Job, I asked him who told him about the opening, and he said Coby. I Knew Coby was a queer, so I had to ask how he knew him. Told me him and Coby were together."
"Oh." I wanted to either blush, or slap him. Either way I wanted to at least stop talking to him. Sometimes we got a long well, able to hold a conversation, but sometimes I just didn't want to deal with him. I hated when he called Coby 'Queer' but it was at least better than faggot. Well, in my opinion anyways, I'm not gay so I wouldn't know. Thankfully he left me alone after that. I made it through class without falling alseep thank god, and was able to go home. Fridays sucked though, cause I was only home for like an hour and a half before I went to work till 9pm. But it was worth it, I made a lot of money, and I needed the money considering I'd have a car soon. I already Had my permit, for a month now. I had just turned sixteen and my mom was nice enough to take me for my test. She'd be giving me her own car and everything, but I had to pay for gas and insurence and the like.
When I got home I ate. I was so hungry...so I made the only thing I was capable of. A peanutbutter sandwich. But it was all well and good, I liked peanutbutter and hell, everyone likes bread right? It all worked out, plus I got the last can of cherry coke. I was thrilled, I could even rub it in my little sister's face when she got home. Sometimes I got my kicks over the simplest things. Then again, I was pretty much crazy, well if someone as down to earth and as dorky as me could be considered crazy. God I was so weird.
My sister came home right as I opened the can of cherry coke. She yelled at me, made some comment on my habits or what not and headed up to her room scoffing about shoelaces being dirty. My sister was strange, but I'm not going to get into that now. She wasn't that important. I yawned and leaned back into the counter, sipping my soda and munching on my sandwhich. I had an hour to work. I supose I could shower. Then I realised something. Mom and dad were going to be home late tonight because of a meeting. I cursed. I wouldn't have a ride there. Justin wasn't working tonight, so I couldn't ask him, and I Alyson and Robin, well I didn't have their numbers, or even knew if they could give me a ride.
Well as luck would have it, as soon as I got out of the shower I remembered I had grandparents. Grandparents who lived very close by, and Grandparents who loved me. I grinned and jumped at the phone, dialing quickly. I was such a moron. Actually, at home I was loud, kinda weird, and sort of energetic. Anywhere else I was just...quiet. I kept to myself publicly. I never really knew why, I was just always that way. To make a long story short, Grandma was thrilled I called, and picked me up right away, I got to work on time, and met Alyson in the backroom.
"Hey, boy." She smiled at me and tucked a lock of purple and white hair behind her ear. "What's up?" Her peircings glittered in the false light. Then I realised it smelled moldy back here. Lovely.
"Nothin." I tucked my hands in my pocket. "Is Julie finished yet?" She was the girl that I worked in place for at the end of her shifts.
"Yeah, she's just dealing with a customer and then you're working." Alyson stacked a few boxes of shoes on top of another few boxes of shoes. She mostly worked back here, considering she had bad anxiety and didn't deal to well with people. "Oh and Aspen?"
"Yeah?" I turned back around just as I was about to leave. When ever she said my name she had something serious to say. Normally she called me "Boy" I don't know why. Justin was "Sugar" and Robin was "Honey". She had one for everyone.
"When Robin gets here, be like, nice to him. Well at least don't get mad at him or anything. He called saying he was running late, he was kinda upset. I think there's something wrong." See what did I tell you? Same with my boss, he calls me by my name, I'm in trouble. He calls me "Kid" though. Actually, he calls everyone Kid.
"Sure thing." I smiled and readjusted my glasses before heading out. Julie smiled at me and motioned for me to take over at the cash register. She muttered something, Grabbed her purse from behind the counter and headed out with a 'See ya!' most likely running late for a date or something. God that girl had a new boyfriend every three days. But she was a nice girl though, and seemed like she was still a virgin, so I guess she really couldn't be considered a slut. But who am I to judge anyways. I was snapped out of my thoughts as Robin emerged from the back room. Alyson was right, he looked kind of sad. "Hey, something wrong, Rob?"
"Don't call me Rob, call me Robin." He huffed and ran a hand through his strawberry blonde hair...he had really shiny hair. It was a pretty color too, jaw length, and sort of layered. I wish I had nice hair. I have this stupid hair that at times looks black and at times looks chestnut. I have angled bangs, but it's sort of short in the back. It looks really stupid, but then again that's what you get when you let your mom cut your hair. "And yes, something is sort of wrong, but I'd appreciate it if you let me keep it to myself."
"Sure thing." I nodded. I liked Robin, he was usually really nice, and we got a long well. I would say we're friends but, we really don't know much about each other...so it's sort of kind of akward to consider him a friend. Plus, we don't hang out outside of work or anything. I was suprised that he dated Coby. When Coby worked here, me and him hung out a lot...and I met a lot of his friends...I just find it funny that I never met Robin. But who knows? There could be a million different reasons behind it and I don't want to get into that now.
As soon asa I got behind the chash register, some girl with pigtails broke away from her two friends to pay for something. She was caked in like glittery make up and I wondered if I could see my reflection in her eyeshadow for a minute. She only had a necklace to buy, so I took from her, and for some reason she giggled over it. I scanned the bar code and she watched me. Handing me a ten I broke it and handed her change back. Before she left the store with her two friends she looked back, giggling and winking at me. Hello!? I had no idea who she was!
"She likes you." Robin said softly, walking over to the chash register. Normally we only had one person working up here, but Fridays got busy...and so did Saturdays for that matter. We worked up here together, which is why we kinda got a long well. I mean when you have to kinda stand next to and around someone for five hours...you have to get a long. Like with Justin. He worked everyday except fridays and wenesdays...and I always had to deal with him.
"Excuse me?" Someone? Like...me? I wanted to laugh. No one had ever liked me...well not true. Coby always hit on me, but it was all in fun, he was only joking...or at least I think he was. Well again, like I said, no one had ever liked me. Even Suzy in third grade...she gave me a valentine...so I kissed her on the cheek. She screamed, hit me, and ran away. That went over well. I haven't a shred of luck since. I think she cursed me.
"She likes you..." He said again, brushing back a few strands of his hair. "She's been in here before...all she does is stare at you. I can't beleive you haven't noticed." Why would I have noticed? What I'm suposed be looking right at the people who stare at me? Or maybe I was just that dense.
"Why would anyone ever like me?" See that's when your thoughts come out through your mouth. But it didn't matter, not like I thought anything I wouldn't say. I was pretty open, had no problem with coming out and speaking my mind. I said something embarassing? It didn't matter, I got over things like that.
"Well, you are really cute." He said even softer and looked down, looking for something to busy his hands with. He found a little cardboard box of pins and started to sift through them. I think he was blushing.
He had just called me cute. I wondered if he was serious...I mean. I would be flattered honestly. It means more coming from someone I know than a stanger actually. I looked back at him again and he looked scared, almost like he was going to cry. I tried to think of something to say...okay so I just said the first thing that popped into my mind.
"Really?" I asked grinning. I mean, someone just says your cute...it seems kinda akward to just say thanks, like you're agreeing with them. After all, I thought I was pretty plain looking. But hell, unless your vain they say you hate the way you look anyways. I tried not to think about it epsecially since he started to say something.
"Well," He started, looking back up at me. I think he was blushing, I smiled. "Yeah. I mean, you've got these adorable freckles, and pretty eyes...they look green sometimes, and then they look brown other times. The same with your hair, sometimes it seems darker, sometimes lighter. And your glasses, they really make you look..." He shut himself up, blushing brighter. "Sorry. I'm not like hitting on you or anything..." He looked awat.
"Oh I don't mind!" I beamed. He was complimenting me, who cared if he was hitting on me or not. "I'd be flattered if you were anyways." I smiled and shrugged.
"It doesn't bug you that I'm a guy?" Robin looked back up, suprised. "I mean..."
"Not at all." I smiled again and someone came up to me, ready to buy what looked like a Tee shirt. It got pretty busy after that, so me and Robin ended our conversation. Actually we didn't talk the rest of the night. Not like we really could. Right when we closed he came up to me.
"Hey, uhmm, Aspen..." He wouldn't look me in the eye. God he was shy. Well so was I so I can't talk. "Earlier, my boyfriend called and broke off our date...I still have tickets to see the movie...would you uh, maybe wanna come?" I blinked a few times. Why not? It would be nice to hang out with him, and he looked kind of lonely.
"Sure." I smiled at him and he smiled back. He had a nice smile, well nice lips at least. "Hey uhm, not to sound rude or anything..." We walked out through the front door. "But is that why you were so bummed earlier?" I normally stayed out of other people's bussiness, but I was curious.
"Uhm yeah." He sighed and tucked his hands in his jean pockets. "He actually. He more than cancled our date." He wouldn't look back up at me. "He uh, broke up with me."
"Oh..." I felt bad for him. I mean I didn't want to pitty him, but...I don't know, he looked really upset. I wanted to hug him or something. I refrained myself knowing that if I did it would be kind of akward. Too bad he wasn't Connor. "I'm really sorry..." I sighed. "If you want, you could tell me about it...I mean. I don't know you, so I don't really know how to handle your situation." Honesty was the best policy. At least then, although that sounded corny, he would know that I cared.
"No, it's all right..." He waved his hand as if to shoo away what he had said before. "I don't want to pour my problems on you." He smiled weakly. "Thanks though."
"The offer's always there." I smiled and we neared the thearter, I almost went to the line, but then remembered he had tickets, so I just followed him.
"You know, you're a really nice guy, Aspen." He smiled at me as he handed the usher out tickets. "I don't come across nice guys too often, especially..." He stopped there. I couldn't figure out what he was about to say, and never did.
"I'm just a nice guy I guess." I shrugged and chuckled. "I have to deal with Drama-Queen Lori, and Connor, who's just a sweetheart. So you kinda have to be nice." I chuckled. My two closest friends. "Plus me and Coby used to hang out, and you had to be a nice guy around him or he'd kick your ass."
"Or jump your bones." Robin let out a weak chuckle. That's right, Justin said that they were going out.
"Was he the one who broke up with you?" I asked, almost afraid that it was the wrong thing to say. We went and got sodas...no one bought food. After a minute, I went back to get candy. I needed to munch on something.
"Yeah." He sighed. "You knew him...he told me." He was silent for a moment, I wasn't sure what to say. "Odd that I never met you before...I mean..." I wondered how long they'd been dating. If it was before Coby quit...Coby already had a boyfriend. Was he cheating on Robin? I wanted to figure this all out but didn't dwell on it. Especially since I didn't want to bring anything up.
"Yeah. Oh by the way, what movie are we seeing?" I asked, trying to change the subject without being too obvious about it. He blushed slightly as we arrived at the thearter we were suposed to go in. I looked at the movie poster. "Holes?" I asked amusedly.
"Shut up. I liked the book as a kid, and..." He blushed deeper. "The main character's kind of cute, for a kid." I wanted to laugh. Not at him, but just cause...I don't know, it was cute the way he was acting.
"Heh, I wanted to see this actually." It was my turn to blush and I readjusted my glasses. "I didn't know who to go with though." I smiled. "Hey how old are you anyways?" He looked younger than me, but that meant nothing. Well, we were about the same height, he was just...well smaller.
"17." He smiled. "You're 16."
"Yeah, how'd you know?" I blinked and laughed.
"Because. I just do." He blushed and headed into the thearter. I gave up on questions and followed him in.
