Maria stood outside waiting for Mr. Douglas. It was windy and Maria wrapped her small sweater around her. She looked around for Mr. Douglas and saw him approaching in the distance. She quickly walked toward.

"Sorry I'm a bit late. I had to grade some papers."

"I understand," she said walking along side him to his car.

"I thought we would go out to dinner at this charming new restaurant I found," he said opening the door for her.

"That sounds great."

The rest of the drive was silent. Maria wasn't sure what to say and felt undeserving of his time and was honored that he was taking her to dinner when he obviously had so many more important things he could be doing. She was relieved when they arrived at the restaurant. It was a small secluded café with a life band. When she first looked at the menu she was shocked. She didn't know everything would be so expensive. She hadn't even heard of most the dishes on the menu. She looked to Mr. Douglas for help and luckily he offered to order for her.

The rest of the dinner went smoothly. Maria was surprised that she had so much to talk about with Matt (he had insisted that she call him that) and was surprised that he actually seemed interested in what she had to say. He was a perfect gentleman the whole time.

They left the café and headed for a near by park for a nighttime walk. Maria shivered in the night air.

"Would you like me jacket?" he asked her.

"Oh, I'm fine."

"Don't be silly," he said and put his jacket around her shoulders.

" Thanks, you're so much nicer than anyone I've ever dated," she said shyly.

"Oh, you flatter me, but really boys your age haven't matured completely yet. They aren't deserving of such a mature woman. You act much older than your age."

Maria blushed and was glad that it was dark outside. He motioned toward a bench and they sat down.

"So do you have any plans for the weekend? Getting together with any of your friends perhaps?"

"Oh, no. I don't think so. My roommate, Amy, probably has plans with her boyfriend and I'm not sure what Greg's doing."

"Oh well that's too bad, but I'm sure you'll find something to occupy your time."

Maria nodded. There was a long silence as they both looked at each other. She had never been very outgoing and would often step back from the crowd and observe people. She did this to Mr. Douglas. There was no doubt about it he was a very good-looking man. He was fairly tall with broad shoulders and sandy blonde hair. His dark brown eyes were mysterious and almost intimidating. His lips were soft and pink. She stared at them and almost without thinking moved in closer. She could hear his breathing now and tilted her head to the side. Quickly she darted in and their lips touched. Mr. Douglas quickly pulled away.

"Maria," was all he said.

Maria was mortified she couldn't believe what she had done. It was so unlike her and with a teacher of all things. She knew it was inappropriate and didn't know what had come over her.

"Sorry, I'm not saying I'm not attracted to you it's just that it would be irresponsible of me to take advantage of you when you obviously don't know what your doing."

"I don't know what came over me, but I can assure you it won't happen again," Maria said quietly.

There was a long pause. Neither of them knew what to say. Before long Maria stood up and started walking back to the car. She couldn't be around him any more. She was so embarrassed. Matt followed her to the car and silently took her home.
