People take words far too lightly these days, at least for my taste. They throw them around as if they mean nothing, and have no consequences. It disgusts me, and it frightens me, as I envision the ruin they will bring down on our heads. They pretend they know nothing of the dangers, they use old words for older things as easily as the words for soft drinks and toilets. But I know them, I do. I know them inside and out. They are scared of the old things, of the powers parents whisper of. They would make these things unreal, to protect themselves. Or they really are just fools, it depends on the person, and it depends on the day.
If they keep going like this, they will destroy themselves, they will bring ruin on the world. Things older than the seas boil in anger at the flippant fools, fantasy writers, game creators, film makers. Words best left dead, names of old things, are stirred so thoughtlessly. Into the world will come the old things, and they are unprepared.
Gods they invoke, casually, as amusing tales, may stir in slumber of thousands of years – in the dust and decay of ancient Rome, in the center of old rings of stone, in the museums.
The museums, glorified grave robbing enterprises, for science, for history, here are displayed the decaying limbs of the dead. See how perfectly preserved is the flesh? The teeth were the source of his mortality. And yet there are those who will allow no autopsy of their own dead… I digress, a habit of the old. The more years you have lived, the more you have rolling about in your head, trying at any and every given moment to capture your attention.
I foretell doom in the earth's future, and I feel the familiar stirrings of epic in the upper airs. I watch this new world for its heroes, I watch it with eager eyes. I can feel the stirrings begin in the antiquities. I can hear the grumblings of slumbering beasts, of wolves and bulls and serpents. To new truths ancient things mold themselves, ancient promises unmade, prophecies of antiquities made irrelevant, rendered lies.
If they are not careful they will wake things old and powerful, if they are not careful, they may even wake me.
