A River's Lament
Over the wide unearthly plain
Touched by neither sun nor rain
The willows whisper to the sky
The coiling mist rising high
A river runs up from the earth
Dark and rushing, from the birth
Till the sea with raucous cry
Meets his lover's mournful sigh
For both, they know what lies within
The shadowed layers of time run thin
They, the ones who dug too deep
To free something from endless sleep
A treacherous gift, a circling crow
Given life in endless flow
Bound by water to the ends of the earth
Forever to ponder what this blessing was worth.
