Prologue
She sat in the park alone at midnight. She stared up at the stars as tears filled her eyes. There had been yet another fight between she and Nicholas, and she stormed out.
She picked up a tiny pebble that she found in the grass and toyed with it in her fingers.
Nicholas had asked her, once again, to move in with him, and she declined. She was comfortable in her cozy little apartment that she shared with her best friend Loxy Cabot. Nicholas seemed to think that, now that they were engaged, they should move in together and get used to each other. She disagreed.
The tears gently streamed down her face and stained her cheeks. She felt the heat of his body and smelled the scent of his cologne as he sat down next to her.
"Serenity," he said quietly.
She continued to stare out into the darkness.
"Serenity, please look at me," he urged.
She turned to face him and he reached up and gently wiped her tears away with his thumbs.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
"You should be," she stated coldly. "You can't push me into something I'm not ready to do."
"I know, and I'm sorry."
She glanced down at the diamond ring on her left hand, and it brought a trace of a smile to her face.
He combed his fingers through her soft brown hair and kissed her lightly.
"I love you, Serenity," he whispered on her lips.
She sighed softly and whispered, "Me too."

She walked into her apartment around 2 A.M. Loxy sat in their living room watching a late movie on TV.
Serenity walked over and collapsed next to her on the couch.
"He did it again, didn't he?" Loxy asked.
She nodded.
"You need to get away, Ser."
Serenity sighed. "Loxy, I can't just pick up and leave."
"Hon, you need to. I think we should go back home for a while, see old friends."
"Lox, I can't. I have my job here, and I have Nick."
"Forget all that for five minutes, and let's just go. You can take off work. It's not going to kill you."
Serenity pondered the thought for a moment. "Fine," she agreed. "When do you want to leave?"
Loxy grinned. "In the morning."
