Sunk
~ * ~
I peered out from under my watermelon-look-alike umbrella, not knowing exactly what I was looking for. On the sidewalk in front of me puddles sprawled out like an endless sea. I was almost scared to take the first step into it, for fear of sinking.
"It's a puddle, Melly, what are you afraid of now? It's not deep; dip your toe in and I'll prove it to you." I muttered to myself. Taking a step out into the puddle I was relieved to find I didn't sink.
"Told you."
"Shut up." I muttered back as I started walking again. I watched my reflection in my patent leather shoes, drips of water flying up from the puddles and running across my mirrored face. It looked like I was crying.
Around the dry haven of my umbrella rain started to fall again. It sent ripples towards me, like little waves set on trying to tip a boat.
"It's just rain, just like this is just a puddle. Why are you so worried about it? This really is pathetic.." I tell myself.
In the distance I see a raised piece of pavement, looking like a safe port in the middle of a stormy sea. Feeling the waves against my shoes grow stronger I start to run, wondering if I might start to sink, now that I've made it this far.
"Oh stop, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. You're getting wet.." I mumble as my umbrella whips out behind me, holding me back from my island in this strange sea. I consider leaving it behind, to fend for itself out in the ocean, but I won't desert it like that. It's been my friend so far.
Finally I make it to the island, only a small piece of raised pavement, but I'm safe from the waves. I can't be sunk here.
I fix my umbrella and lift it back over my head. Again, the rain can only fall outside my little safe haven, here on my island.
"Melly, this is incredibly silly. Didn't we just find out that the puddle is not deep? You're not going to sink into it? This really is pathetic."
"But it looks so dark. Just like a deep stormy sea. I'm not going out there again."
"This is pathetic. What will people think? 'See that girl over there in the puddle? Just standing there? What a freak!'"
"No one else is out in this storm. They're safe at home. They don't risk being sunk."
"'What a FA - REAK!'"
"No.."
"Freak."
"Leave me alone."
"FREAK! FREAK!"
"Just leave me alone," I whisper to myself. I feel a tear slide down my nose. I watch it fall in slow motion, hitting the edge of the puddle, making waves under my umbrella, my safe haven.
"Leave me alone." As the waves wash up against my shoes, tipping me; this is the last straw.
I'm sunk.
