This was written in response to a prompt on Neopets.com. The prompt was to write a free-verse poem about a child thrown onto the streets of New York with only a dog for a companion, but the dog gets run over.
Little Lost Companions
I watched him every passing day
Those sad eyes with no cheer
Those sad eyes with no hope
A little lost child looking for kindness
On this street where little was found
This busy avenue of people
This busy avenue of apathy
For one sad eyed little boy
A companion came to him not long ago
A little lost boy just like him
A little lost boy looking for a friend
A puppy, abandoned on this cold
And Hellish avenue
Two companions they played together
Two companions they laughed together
With fate to silence only one
And leave the other a little lost boy
With the screeching tires of a yellow car
With the screaming of a child's agony
With the tears of an onlooker who can only watch
