I can't know the pain of rejection

before I'm even born.

I'm not you.

I can't feel the rage at a world of sorrow,

unwarranted and undeserved.

I'm not you.

I can't learn the fear of humiliation

at the hands of an unjust fate.

I'm not you.

But I do know the pride

in overcoming all odds to win.

I do feel the joy

in succeeding where others have failed.

I do learn the strength in laughter

when all one has is simply that.

For I see it in you.

Others may see a punk, a thug.

A "Black Kid".

I see a bright star, a shining dream.

I see a pure heart and the energy to survive.

I see this and more

in you.

And may you see it too.
