The Seven Stages
Caitlin Walsh
First you are nothing
just dust
you float in oblivion. Then
you're born
wailing, screaming and hungry
you're the center of attention. Next
you're a child,
teetering, tottering, but lovable and cute,
soon you're off to school and Then,
you're a teenager
awkward and moody, you shun
almost everybody and in isolation
you become an adult.
Now you're a respective, productive
and responsible member of society
but you're cast out as soon as
you turn old
and gray. The young ones
snicker and complain behind your back.
But remember as you die,
you turn back to dust
because dust you were and dust
you shall become.
