Chapter 3 - Fascination
A/N: New chapter for yall! Read and enjoy! A review would be good too...
For the next week, Torey walked with Jayda to all of their classes, and sat with her at lunch, much to the displeasure of the female population of the school. Whenever Jayda was alone, they pushed her around even more, adding to the bruises already put there by her father. But she didn't care, she was used to it. She was, however, worried about Torey. Why did he want to be friends with her? What did he see in her that no one had ever bothered to look for before? While all this was going through her mind, she completely ignored Torey, letting him walk with her and sit with her, but not saying a word. He would try, of course, to get her to say something, to get her to slip and actually acknowledge his presence. Finally, at lunch, after she couldn't take it any longer, she asked him, "Why are you following me around?! Why do you insist on talking to me, even when no one else will?!"
All he did was smile and say, "Finally. She speaks."
Jayda sighed and went back to her food. It looked like she wouldn't get her answer anytime soon.

Jayda walked along the sidewalk towards her house, for once enjoying her quiet Friday afternoon. She shivered slightly, feeling the cold air on her bare face. Then she heard Torey's voice.
"Can I walk you home?" She stopped and looked at him, shrugged, then started walking again. He followed, walking close next to her. "And to answer your questions, it's because you fascinate me."
"Huh?" At first Jayda was confused, but then she remembered her outburst at lunch. "Oh. I...fascinate you?" She was confused again.
"Yeah. You make me think. You make me wonder. What can I say, I'm fascinated." He took her hand in his and held it as they continued to walk. She grew nervous.
"He's holding my hand." Jayda thought. "What the hell is he doing? I fascinate him? When did all this happen?!" She was almost glad when she saw her house, but then she remembered the daily beating that awaited her. She quickly let go of Torey's hand, whispered a, "Thanks." and practically ran up the steps to her house, leaving Torey standing on the sidewalk, watching her. He turned and walked away as the door closed. Jayda watched from the window as he slowly walked away, then walked into the living room where her father sat waiting.
