Still Beating

They ripped my imprisoned heart from my chest,
Held it tauntingly in front of me, still beating.
My blood trickled from the torn arteries,
They hurled it to my feet, still beating.
I starred, almost not caring
It lay, withered, still beating
I felt the empty void that was my chest
Starring at the breath of life, still beating
He came slowly forward
He picked it up, setting it free, still beating
He didn't know what he'd done
He handed it to me, still beating
I took it carefully
I caressed it gently, still beating
He smiled nervously
His hand never left it, still beating
I had a void with no way to fill it
My heart was held, still beating
Open heart surgery isn't my greatest strength
But alas, it's still beating
