Sometimes, populations will just rise up against their opressors. Nobody can really predict it before it happens and only afterward can scholars find the logic behind it. It happened eight hundred years ago in Paris, France. It happened six hundred years ago in Moscow, Russia. And it happened one hundred years ago, on July 5th, 2405 A.D. in Ottawa, DUSA.
Ottawa, in the Democratic United States of America, latitude 45.25 N, longitude 75.42 W. It was the first city-state of Ancient Canada to join the old United States of America, thereby creating the DUSA in 2099.
Ottawa, whose politicians pushed the rest of Canada to recognize the République de Québec so that they themselves could join the magnificent DUSA.
Ottawa, whose proud men and women fought in the South American War and singlehandedly took Buenos Aires.
Ottawa, which, somehow, never lost its spirit even after three hundred years of opression by Washington.
Of course for the longest time it was utterly submitted to the DUSA. Even in the last years, the Hegemon of Washington only felt it necessary to station minimal troops in Ottawa.
This document will chronicle the events in the City of Ottawa from the morning of July 3rd to the afternoon of July 5th 2405.

At exactly 0630 hours and 00 seconds on July 3rd, the huge doors of the Democratic United States of America Headquarters (DUSAHQ) in Ottawa opened. Out stepped a short, thin-faced man wearing a black fur hat on his head, a sonic pistol at his side and shiny black boots on his feet. He was dressed in a white jacket with three rectangular black buttons on the front, white pants with creases freshly ironed in and black leather gloves. On his chest were pinned plaques indicating his rank, merits and name. On this last was engraved ''William P. Doyle.''
For the sake of this narrative, let us go inside Lieutenant Doyle's head and examine his thoughts. Here we go. Woosh.
...and stand at ease. I motion to the four genetically enhanced Combat Ready Soldiers (''Golems'') who are still standing inside to come out before the doors close again. Hey, it's not their fault. They were just defrosted fifteen minutes ago and must still be kind of dull. All right, time to get moving. Walking toward the gate blocking off the stretch of road just in front of HQ. Are the Golems following me? Good. Presenting my patrol pass to the Advanced Golem at the gate... stupid, useless ritual that is. As if the miserable citizens of this tiny city would cause any trouble. But I think that every morning. Ah, there we go. The A-Golem is lifting the steel sawhorse from the middle of the road and depositing it on the sidewalk... and we're through. I can hear it putting the gate back into place. ''All right, Soldiers, let's go. Today we're patrolling from here to the Canal and for two blocks on either side. We have to be back by 1300 or I won't have the privilege of helping to set up the America Day's Eve sermon hall. That means double-time, Soldiers. March!''
Look at them go. They sure look intimidating, don't they? And trotting behind them allows me to travel in their wake. Turning the first corner, out of sight of HQ --
And we're out of Bill P. Doyle's head. That's because he doesn't have one anymore. A sniper camped in a window high above the street annihilated it with his MS-102 energy rifle. As Doyle's body (minus the head) started falling, the crowd around engulfed it. Fifteen minutes later there was no trace of Lt. William P. Doyle remaining on this earth.
Just before the four Golems (who were still marching, oblivious to the disappearance of their leader) could turn another corner, thereby noticing the Lieutenant's absence, a huge Faraday cage dropped on them, thereby disrupting the radio control that DUSAHQ Ottawa had on them. Of course, these patrol Golems wouldn't be allowed the slightest bit of autonomy if contact was lost. Too stupid and dangerous. So these supposedly Combat Ready Soldiers were just standing there. Eight men stepped out of the crowd and shot with projectile weapons in the cage until the Golems were a pulp. The Faraday cage then came up and retreated onto a rooftpop, pulled up by clothesline, and the eight men rushed in to secure the soldiers' weapons and clean up the mess. One patrol eliminated. Now...
At 1758 that day, before the gates at DUSAHQ closed for the night, the receptionist just beyond the great doors received a radio call from Lieutenant Doyle's set. It stated that he and his patrol couldn't make it home in time for closing, so they had requisitioned a home for the night. They would be home at 0630 the next day.
Obviously this radio call was fake. It was done by a rather skilled imitator using Doyle's captured radio.
He did the same with all the other patrol radios that had been captured that day.

At 1900, after a special feast for the whole compound (except the Golems on guard duty), everyone at DUSAHQ Ottawa was treated to a speech by the local Underling of the Hegemon, marking America Day's Eve. The speech was broadcast live to the whole City of Ottawa. What follows is a transcription of it.
''My friends. I welcome you on this glorious America Day's Eve. Tomorrow, July 4th, three hundred and six years will have passed since Mexico City and Ottawa joined the United States of America, by that action creating our marvelous Democratic United States of America. (Cheers)
''In 2096 Ottawa and Mexico were weak, its people living in misery. So the USA decided to bring civilization and democracy to these backward city- states. After the crooked politicians on Ottawa's Parliament Hill resisted the assimilation of Ottawa into the United States, President Nelsons sent troops in to remove the evil regime from power. As they crushed the Canadian army on LeBreton Flats, the brave soldiers were cheered by the local population. In those far-off days, these very headquarters were built so that our soldiers could be protected from the dangerous Canadian extremist terrorists that plagued the city back then. (Applause)
''At last, on July 4th 2099, the very same day that used to be called Independence Day, Mexico City and Ottawa were proclaimed to be assimilated and gave up their tyrranical Constitutions so that the great Martial Law Constitution could be issued, ensuring safety and peace throughout North America. (Applause)
''Over the next ten years, the pockets of nationalist resistance all over the Great North were eliminated. Only the cruel quasi-communist Republic of Québec resisted, thanks to the help of the so-called European ''Democracies.''
''So let us give thanks to the Hegemon for the brotherhood, unity and peace we enjoy today...''

But that night the unity may not have been as great as the Underling believed. In the district of Aylmer, the seven leaders of the underground Free Ottawa Movement (FOM) met in the condemned Old Library. They reviewed their final plans one last time before collecting the captured Golem weapons and disbanding at 0300. Tomorrow would be a eventful day.

On July 4th at 0549 DUSAHQ Ottawa received an emergency call about a fire in Hull district. Exactly ten minutes later, three Emergency Ready Firefighters (''Fire Golems'') were thawed and on their way to the blaze. Before they even got there, DUSAHQ received yet another emergency call about a fire at the opposite end of town. Another team of Fire Golems had to be thawed and dispatched. These calls continued reporting various infernos at various intervals throughout the day. DUSAHQ depleted its reserve of Fire Golems by 1130 hours and had to start dispatching Combat Ready Soldiers, with humans at their head, to fight the fires. In the rush of that day, nobody noticed that the patrols which had been supposed to come back first thing in the morning never did so. Anyway, all the blazes weren't entirely put out until 1610. The humans who had been at the head of the fire teams made their weary ways home, for the most part just leaving their damaged Golems to rot at the charred sites of the fires. When they got home most managed to clean themselves and a few were able to grab a bite to eat before collapsing on their bunks. At the insistence of the base leader, however, the festivities scheduled for America Day night remained scheduled. Those who could drag themselves from their beds participated in the feast, games and contests. By 2200, in fact, almost everyone was up and clustered in the enclosed garden, waiting for the traditional fireworks display to begin. And so it did, in all its colorful, noisy glory. And if some of those fireworks seemed to be coming from a little far away, nobody noticed. Even when some of the rockets didn't explode, nobody wasn't alarmed. The automatic guns could take care of those. It was only when the unexploded ''fireworks'' began accelerating toward the ground too fast for the guns to track them that people started to clue in. When an explosion was heard directly in front of the DUSAHQ building, panic broke out in the courtyard. As the explosions continued, everybody started rushing toward the doors leading to safety inside the building.
Let's move back a bit in time now and examine the day's events from a different perspective.
Since 0530 that morning, FOM teams had been setting fire to buildings. At 1330 they stopped and moved on to their next objective: setting up mortars to send explosive rockets toward the DUSAHQ Ottawa building during the big fireworks display. And it went swimmingly. As the rockets came down they hit the three guard towers at the front of the building, as well as the first floor of DUSAHQ itself, the one which hid the heavy weapons. As soon as the explosions stopped, FOM members rushed to the sealed front doors and placed homemade plastic explosive charges all around the frame. Detonating these caused the huge doors to fall into the building, crushing most of the soldiers standing ready in the lobby and covering the wide stairs leading from the bowels of the HQ. As the remaining soldiers were shot down by their own weapons in the hands of the rebels, engineers from the FOM ran in to weld the humongous metal doors to the floor, preventing further Golems from climbing up from the first basement. The engineers then cut a small, one foot-by one foot hole into the doors directly above the stairs. All the FOM members who were outside hurried in to drop their homemade pipe bombs into the hole. The engineers re-sealed it before the pipe bombs started exploding, then picked up weapons and joined the rest of the FOM rushing down the narrow service stairs. The resistance members completely overwhelmed the five underground levels of the base before the DUSA troops could get organized.
By the next morning the City of Ottawa was free from DUSA control and hed sent a call for help to the République de Québec. With its help, Ottawa was able to keep its newly won independence. In the following years, the City of Ottawa, supplied in weapons by Québec, fought off the DUSA troops sent to retake their lost colony. Throughout the course of the last century, Ottawa has been the symbol and the patron of resistance organizations across the Americas. To this day they have inspired (and aided) fifteen cities to acheive independence from the Democratic United States of America. They now form the Alliance of Free Municipalities, trading in subversive information, plans and weapons with individuals in various cities on the continent.
This text is a reminder of the true history of Ottawa and the power people have to stand up to the tyrant in Washington.
