Alex walked behind the garage and sat down in the wet grass. The rain came down strong, not hard, but like a gentle, warm shower. She wrapped her arms around her knees and sat staring at the ground. How could this happen? She thought to herself. Everything had been going so well with her mom and Lance. The only father I've ever had, and she takes him away from us. She began sobbing into her knees. The wind picked up around her, but she didn't notice. The tears on her face added to the raindrops falling around her. Strong arms wrapped around her shoulders, startling her.

" Nick," she said through tears, looking up at him.

"It's okay Alex," he said, hugging her tightly. Her head hit his chest as she let him hold her. They sat that way for a while, both unaware of the growing storm around them. "What happened?"

" Alex!," they could hear her mother calling her.

"Do you want to go inside?" Nick asked her.

"No," she replied trying to compose herself. "Can we go somewhere tonight? I don't want to stay here."

"Of course, you ready to go?"

"I think so. Nicholas-" she paused.

"I love you, too Alex." He said, kissing her on the cheek. He stood up and held out a hand for her, pulling her to her feet. They walked over to his car parked in the driveway, and Nick opened the door for her like he always did when she was sad.

" Alex!" her mom called before he shut her door. "Where are you going Alex? I need you right now." Nick looked into her eyes.

"Let's just get out of here." Alex said. Nick closed the door and went around to his side, climbing in beside her. Backing out of the driveway, they could see Astrid's mom on the porch, watching them, tears falling down her cheeks.

They rode in silence to Nick's apartment. Nick shut off the car, as Astrid sat staring off into space. "Alex?" he asked, turning towards her.

"Hmm?" she said, still staring off into the distance.

"You wanna talk about it?"

"I want to take a shower first."

"Oh god, you must be freezing." He said remembering their clothes were soaking wet. He got out of the car and opened her door. Alex didn't move. " Alex?" he kneeled beside the door and reached for her hand. "Do you want to go inside?"

"Yes." She got out of the car and followed him up the four flights to his apartment. Nick shut the door behind them.

"I'm going to go take a shower." Alex said, walking into Nick's bedroom.

"Okay." Nick said, walking to the couch and sitting down. Alex is really taking this hard. He thought to himself. Her mom has done some pretty stupid stuff before, but this has to be her all time low. He'd never seen Alex look this sad before. He heard the water shut off and got up to get a coke from the fridge, then sat back down on the couch. Alex came out of his bedroom in pajama pants and one of his t-shirts. Her red eyes told him that she had been crying in the shower. She walked over to the couch and sat down next to him. "You wanna talk about it now?"
