"What happened Alex?" Nick asked, putting an arm around her as she sat beside him.
"Well, Lance was gone on that business trip you know?" Alex asked, as new tears began to fall down her face. "He was supposed to come back tonight, but I guess he came home early or something, because he got home last night instead. Anyway, he went into their bedroom and found her in bed with his brother."
Nick wiped away a tear from her cheek. "Oh Alex," he said. "I'm so sorry.
"I just don't understand why she would do this to us. He's the only father I've ever know. I've never even seem them fight, but all of a sudden she throws their whole marriage away. God I just hate her so much right now." Alex laid her head against Nick's shoulder and began crying again.
Nick pulled her closer and held her. "Are you sure they won't work it out?" he asked her.
"If you walked in on me and your brother having sex would you try to work it out?" she asked him.
"So I'm guessing that's a no?" he replied.
She smiled sadly. "No. Trust me, when I got home this morning he was already at his friend's house, and he's picking up all of his stuff tomorrow. They're getting a divorce."
"It just doesn't seem like something your mom would do." Nick said, holding her tightly.
"Yeah, I know." She replied, sighing. "I'm tired though, Nick. Let's go to bed."
"Okay." He said, getting up from the couch and following her into his bedroom. "I'm going to take a shower real quick Alex."
"Alright." She replied. He kissed her on the cheek and walked into the bathroom.
Alex laid down in his bed and turned to face the window. Lightning was flashing across the sky and thunder could be heard quietly. The storm had grown worse since they had left her house. Fitting, she thought. Tomorrow Lance would pick up the rest of his things from their house, and it would be just her, her mother, her twin brother Reese, and her niece Breah again. She remembered when Lance and her mom had first got married, just three years ago. They had been so happy together. Alex couldn't remember her mom every being as happy as she was with Lance. Her real father Tim had walked out on them when Reese and her were four months old. Her mother had only been seventeen years old, and had to raise them all alone, with only a little help from her own parents. Alex hadn't heard from her dad since he had left, but she knew he had moved to California and started a new family with some girl there. It's weird how he never tried to even contact her or Reese, yet he had a new wife and kids who he took care of. How can someone choose one child over another? They're still your kids. Alex looked back out the window at the dark sky. The rain was beating down softly on the window. She heard the bathroom door open and the light switch off as Nick came back into the bedroom. He laid down next to her and put an arm around her as she turned to face him. "I love you Nicholas." She said, kissing him softly on the lips. His hair and skin were still wet from the shower, and he pulled her closer, kissing her again.
"I love you too, Al." he said. "Good night sweetheart."
"Night," Alex replied, and wrapped an arm around his back. She was so tired from crying that she fell asleep within moments.
