They both faced each other, not making one move, watching each others
body language (or what there was of it). Mistara physically calmed her
mind and instinctively she tightened her grip on the knife in her right
hand. Her eyes burned and she set her mouth in a firm, straight line. She
knew that this was it.
The fate of her friends and ultimately the fate of the human world depended on this fight. She would NOT lose.
"You know the rules of this fight?" She looked out at Sharina from underneath her eyelashes.
"Of course." Sharina smirked, "Each of us have three weapons of our choice. We fight within the confinements of this house. No using any other weapons then those we have chosen. Oh, and we may not call anyone to help us, not my aides, nor your friends."
Mistara nodded and glanced toward the right side of the room, where five vampires and her friends stood. From there Mistara could see each emotions and with one nod of her head, she hoped that she had assured them of her success. She had a plan.
She faced Sharina once more, bracing herself.
Sharina attacked first, running toward Mistara holding her stake high above her head. Mistara dropped down into a crouch and rolled out of the way, with Sharina's feet barely skimming her head. Mistara hopped back on her feet and attacked Sharina, who's back was facing her, and threw one arm around her neck in an attempt to bring her to her knee's. Sharina, however, was not having any of it. She grabbed Mistara's forearm and flipped Mistara over her shoulder, who landed on her back painfully. Mistara's eyes closed in a moment of pain and she realized that this was a mistake, for as soon as she closed her eyes, Sharina pounced on top of her holding the stake above her heart. Mistara had a fraction of a second to grab the wooden tool and keep it from killing her. Both struggled, each trying to overpower the other. Straining, each one looked into the others eyes, both mirroring their hate and determination.
Mistara felt her strength begin to wither. The stake inched a millimetre closer and it seemed to give Sharina a small satisfaction. An evil smile gathered on her cold beautiful lips, mocking Mistara in her position. But Mistara would have none of it. Slowly she felt more strength gather in her arm and she started to push back with more force. Slowly, inch by inch, the stake moved away from her heart, meanwhile Mistara never took her eyes away from Sharina's.
With one mighty heave, Mistara pushed back the stake and punched Sharina across the face with her other fist, making the other vampire's head snap back. Mistara managed to push Sharina off her and jump to her feet. She grabbed the stake that had fallen out of Sharina's hand and was about to stab her when she saw Sharina make a motion to one of her vampire aides. Mistara slowly turned her head in the direction of her friends and what she saw shocked her.
Jenna had been taken away from Justin and Jules and now was being held by four vampires, one who was holding a sword to her throat.
"Jenna." She whispered, her heart and eyes full of fear for her best friend.
"New deal, Misty." said Sharina as she got up from her position on the floor, "You forfeit this duel and Jenna lives, but if you continue this, I will not hesitate to tell them to slit her throat. I'll give you a few minutes to think about it."
Mistara broke out into a cold sweat. Vampires had taken her lover, had changed her as well, but could she stand it if she lost her best friend? Sacrificing herself for a cause was one thing, but putting anothers life to an end for the same cause was something completely different. Wasn't this what the White One had said? "I warn you, vampire against her kind, be careful, for your actions will cause the death of a person in this gathering." Was this situation what she meant?
Mistara looked over at Jenna and saw the understanding that was clearly in her eyes. She began to speak.
"My death will be avenged Mistara. You cannot let her win and take over. Too many humans would die, and all we have fought for as long as I've been here will be lost. Please, don't worry about me. I'll be watching and fighting still, except from a slightly higher level. Do not let her win!" Jenna's voice was not one of fear, but of desperation and understanding. Mistara slowly nodded her head and turned back to Sharina, who was looking quite proud and sure.
"You have played a harmful trick that is very effective, dearest opponent," Mistara said coldly, "but I'm afraid that Jenna's life must end. In the heat of the moment, I wonder if we might have a drink?"
Sharina nodded and turned to lead Mistara into an adjourning room. It was not as fancy as the one they were previously in but had similar decor, with the exception of dark red. At one end of the room, Mistara spotted a large liquor bar with different bottles of clear or amber coloured liquid. She smiled. Perfect.
With Sharina's back turned, Mistara was tempted to kill her right there, but she also knew it was unfair and not honourable. She would wait until the perfect moment. With this thought, Mistara cautiously reached into her vest and pulled out a small knife, silently unlocking the mechanism.
Sharina reached the table first and started to pour out the drinks into wine glasses. "You know, Mistara, you do surprise me. I thought that you were beginning to weaken emotionally. Apparently I was wrong." Sharina handed Mistara a glass, meanwhile taking a sip of her own.
"I have made it through many years with detached emotions. Being with humans again may have weakened me slightly, but not completely. This is probably the reason that I am letting you kill Jenna."
Sharina smiled. "She's not dead...yet. After I kill you, I want to have that pleasure myself." Sharina tipped back her glass and finished it.
Mistara's heart tightened instantly, but she didn't show it. Mistara had the feeling that Sharina did not give merciful deaths.
"Would you like another drink?" Mistara asked, knowing that this was her chance to destroy Sharina.
Sharina stared at her empty glass for a moment before nodding and handing it to Mistara, who took it and turned her side to Sharina. Almost without moving, she removed the small vial from within her jacket, her hand concealed by the liquor jug held in her other hand. Silently, with Sharina watching her, Mistara poured the clear liquor into the glass, while also pouring the tiny vial in the other hand. She quickly replaced the vial before she took away the jug from the glass. Mistara set the jug down and handed Sharina her newly refilled glass.
Sharina nodded and took her glass to the other side of the room. Mistara followed, feeling a strong feeling of victory and relief that it had gone well. The entire worlds fate rests within how the next few minutes went.
"You know," said Sharina, breaking into Mistara's thoughts, "I think that we should bring Jenna and the others in here now. I like this room better anyway." Sharina smiled and walked over to the entrance, motioning her aides to bring the others inside.
Everyone entered and stood in a solemn line. Mistara looked at every one of her friends, just standing there, completely helpless. Once again the danger of the situation hit her with full force.
"Aw, this is so cute! All the slayers tied up and waiting on Mistara to save them." Sharina said sarcastically, slowly walking over to Jenna.
Mistara just wished she would shut up and take a sip of that glass. Instead, Sharina walked straight up to Jenna and lifted her chin with the tips of her fingers. She turned the slayers head left to right before taking her hand away and lifting her glass from the table she had set it on. Mistara waited, trying to conceal her anxiety.
Sharina swirled the glass in front of her. "Funny how life can end so fast, right Misty? One moment people are here, living their dull, mundane lives, and the next they are dead." Sharina looked at Mistara and slowly took a sip of her glass, "But we are vampires, right? We know all about death. We bring it, and hell, we are dead. So, I ask you, what is the point of living, when you know you are going to die?"
Mistara smirked and brought her hands together in front of her. "I don't know the reason that all of us live, Sharina, but I know why I'm here. My destiny is to kill you and by drinking that glass........you have fulfilled it yourself."
Sharina's face paled. She slowly lifted her glass and held it out in front of her. Her breathing became shallow and her dark eyes lifted to Mistara's infuriated ones.
"Poison. I should have known, you rotten daughter of a snake!" Sharina hissed.
Mistara tensed her arms. "You were the first to try to end this fight unfairly with Jenna as bait!"
"It's expected of me. I'm the one who's got the evil, diabolical plan!" Sharina fell forward and gripped the table, glaring up at Mistara.
"Don't you know that good always wins out over evil? It's always written in the stars." Mistara felt strength gather and prepared herself once more for a fight.
Sharina flew at Mistara, her hands in front of her like claws, her teeth bared like a wild animal. Mistara grabbed Sharina's wrists and held them in a vice grip. It was a struggle to keep her balance, and even though Sharina's strength was withering because of the poison, her renewed hatred gave her slightly more strength. Both vampires stood there, straining, and trying to overpower each once more.
I will not give in!, thought Mistara, I will not let my friends die! I will not let this monster win!
Mistara took all the strength she was giving to pushing Sharina away, and brought her close, twisting the other vampire's arms behind her. Their face were only inches apart and they could feel each others hot breath on their faces.
"How?!" Sharina gritted out.
"Hay poder de doler y el poder de curarse." Mistara sneered.
Sharina eyes widened slightly and Mistara took that opportunity to release the vampires hands from behind her back and pulled them out in front of them. In that position, Mistara tensed her muscles, and with a great heave, threw the witch-vampire across the room, making her collide with the liquor bar. The sound of glass shattering and of Sharina back landing on broken glass was music to Mistara ears.
Mistara wasted no time in killing the vampires that still held Jenna and untying all of their bonds. She gave them all a tearful hug and told them to beware of other vampires in the house. During this time, Mistara had her back turned to where Sharina lay and had not noticed the slowly mass of black satin. Sharina slowly and painfully drew out a large dagger from her cloak and aimed at Mistara's back.
Jules, however, was standing to the left of Mistara and caught the glimpse of the dagger.
"Mistara!" Jules called out, but by the time the vampire turned around, it would be to late. The only thing that would save Mistara would be immediate action. Jules sprang from her position and put herself in the path of the dagger. It was a split second before she felt the cold, hard metal enter her chest and in a moment later, her heart. Jules sank to the ground.
Mistara spun around the moment her name had been called and had seen Jules put herself in the path of the dagger. She now knelt beside Jules, holding her mentor and gently smoothing back her hair. She looked down at the wound and winced. It was the heart the dagger had entered and it had punctured an artery. Everytime Jules heart beat, it pumped more blood out of her. Unless they got her to a hospital within the next few minutes, Jules was dead.
Mistara started to bark orders at Justin, not caring about Sharina. She tried to pick up the middle aged woman, but was stopped by a gentle hand on her arm. Mistara looked down into the old and dying eyes of the one who had taught her so much in so short a time.
"Mistara," Jules rasped out, "I have a secret. One that only you must know. Tell the others to leave us for a few minutes."
Mistara motioned for the others to leave, and they did with Justin pulling Jenna. Once they were gone, Mistara turned back to Jules. Jules hand reached out and grabbed Mistara, squeezing a small vial into it. Mistara looked down at the vial and realized that it was the exact same she had used to poison Sharina. She looked back to Jules, her confusion clearly written on her face.
"Yes." Jules nodded, her voice low and hoarse, "This is the same kind of vial and liquid that was used to kill Sharina. Jenna never told you where she got that knife, but it was a gift. A gift from the White One. A gift.....from me."
Mistara eyes widened in shock as she looked down at the older woman. Jules eyes become a pure white as she spoke once again.
"My time has come, Mistara, that I will no longer be on this earth to protect humans. I must pass on this responsibility to someone of strength and of a pure heart. I had hoped to pass it on to Sharina, but it was not fates plan. This whole experience was a test, Mistara. A test to see if you had what it took to be a Protector, and you have passed. Give me your hand."
Mistara slowly placed her hand in the Protectors and instantly felt surrounded by a white, warm light. She felt herself being lifted off the ground physically and images that were beyond her's or anyone's understanding began to flash before her eyes in vivid colours of white, yellow, and bright blue. Mistara felt her body being suspended in outer space, with all the planets surrounding her and the master sun beaming upon her face. All the earth and everything surrounding stood still and Mistara heard a deep booming voice call out.
"You are chosen. Do you accept the responsibility of protecting the humans, plants, and animals of earth from any harm in any way?"
Mistara felt an unexplainable feeling well up within her soul. "Yes." She whispered.
In an instant, everything exploded into a blinding white light and Mistara was sent hurdling backwards through space. Then, as fast as it all came, everything disappeared and Mistara found herself standing in the middle of the room. She looked to the spot where Jules had lain moments before, but was surprised to see only a white scarf lying there. She also looked to where Sharina had been thrown but nothing remained of the she- vampire. Slowly, Mistara walked over to the white scarf and bent down to pick it up. As she grabbed it, Mistara noticed a new mark on her hand. She bent closer to look at it.
It was a tattoo in the combination of an X and a snake. It was identical to the one on the White One's hand. Mistara stood up and held the scarf out in front of her. She started to speak softly, as though in a trance.
"Both good and evil died here today, and only the good survived. I am the new Protector, and I must carry on where Jules left off. The evil that still inhabits this world will be vanquished and if it takes my death to do it, so be it."
Mistara turned and stalked out of the room, prepared to be the earths newest Protector.

It would be much appreciated.
