The Road to the Light

Chronicle II: Warped
The clatter of footsteps filled the once haunted hallway. Parents, friends, classmates, and even a few teachers started to file into the small auditorium. Two blurs rushed through the crowd, "You didn't tell me that the concert was about to start!" A pair of clouded auburn eyes glared into the other one's bangs.
"It wasn't my fault that you daydreamed for so long. It's not my fault."
"Less talk, more run!" The crowded high school started to fill even more. People fell over as the two dashed down the hallway. ~Oh my god, the conductor is going to kill us. If it wasn't my stupid problem with paying attention, we'd be up there by now.~ Amy clinched her hand, feeling the pain of her mistake. ~How could I have been so stupid?~ Her foot slid under the curtain along with the rest of her body. Their dramatic entrance was the entertainment for the dozen or so choristers that stood on top of the risers. And, of coarse, one furious choir director.
"Where have you two been?! The show starts in one minute!" The temples of the director inflated with fury, "You two are in so much trouble when this is all over. But I will wait to punish you till after the show. Get on the risers now!" The two scrambled onto the risers, getting looks from everyone around them. Partners gave dirty ones; others just stared blankly.
When they got in their places, the curtain opened. The audience stared out to the people who were on stage blankly. There wasn't even any blinking; just odd blank stares.
Amy moved out of her frozen pose to look around. No one else was moving ether. She turned towards her frozen partner, "Chris, what's going on? Why isn't anyone moving?" But he just stared out into space. ~Something's wrong. Something is terribly wrong.~ Amy jumped off of her spot on the back riser. Peering around, she noticed one thing still moving.
"Adam! Thank God!" She ran over to her equally confused friend, embracing him.
Surprised at the reaction, Adam moved away from his romantic friend, "Tell me what's going on. There's something not right about this aura around us. I don't know what it is but-"
"We do now!" Amy jumped closer to Adam again as they peered into the face of what looked to be a giant portal. It moved with such grace and speed, but not making a sound. ~I knew that there was something strange outside. Wonder if this has to do with the odd colors that were outside?~ The next thing that happened was so sudden that even if the people were unfrozen, they wouldn't have seen a thing. The portal inched closer and closer to the two friends, sucking nothing in its dark structure. Nothing except for Amy's necklace, which flung into the darkness of the portal.
"Damn! My necklace!" Her feet raced closer to the obscurity of the portal. There was a slight resistance, a pull on the leg.
"There's no point in risking you life for that thing! Amy, we need to run." His voice was rushed and breathy. If Amy could see his eyes, they would have been full of urgency and fear, "You might get yourself killed."
"My father died for that necklace. If he did then I should too." Her feet leapt into the gateway of darkness. Cursing, Adam followed his dear friend into the unknown structure of the doorway.
The world turned still and silent, darkness filled the room.
~*~
~I'm falling. Falling in darkness.what's going on? One minute I am ready to sing, the next I'm in a portal. Why does my life go from bad to worse? I'm falling, falling in an endless pit of darkness. Help me. Save me. Hold me in your arms.~
A voice called out to her from the dark hell, "Amy. Amy wake up!" Her eyes, once clouded, were now reopened in the light. A figure's face looked at her.
"Amy, are you all right? Come on, answer me!"
"gah.Adam? What's going on?" Her vision was more focused now, "Where are we?"
"Don't know," with deep uncertainty in his voice, "It looks kind of like one of those Japanese comic books."
"You mean manga."
"Whatever." Amy looked around. He was right; it did look like something out of a Japanese comic book. Though the trees and animals around them didn't have cute eyes, the place looked almost too fantasy to be real. One of those virtual reality games? No. It couldn't be that. There was something fishy about the place around her. Something unearthly, something not like home.
"Looks like something out of Inu-Yasha. You think we're trapped in a Japanese cartoon?"
"NO! ANYTHING BUT THAT!" The jokes slowly faded as they realized that this was no dream. Something was truly wrong. The laughter faded into the night sky above them. The stars looked eerily back into their eyes. The trees stood in the darkness, belligerent and mysterious. No creatures walked near their frozen feet. The place was deserted of any other life besides trees and stars. Could they be at the end of the world? Was this the future of mankind? Everything was so confusing, just like puberty.
"It's almost like a vision." They stared in wonder at the scenery, unaware that they were being watched. A stray arrow suddenly shot through the silent night air. The world grew alive again. A denice voice filled the air, feminine yet strong.
"Who's there?" There was a shuffling of feet as a figure appeared from out of the obscurity. A women with clothes the color of the forest in the daylight walked up to the two strangers. Amy stood quietly, even though she was shaking. Her hand wrapped around Adam's trembling, "Speak, Those Who Lie in the Darkness. I will think of you as an ememy if you don't." Amy's once cold eyes looked Adam in the eye. ~Please speak, Adam. I don't want to be the one who gets the bow. This is the time the show you are a man.~
"We are two strangers that entered this wood. We do not know what your customs are, so please forgive us. My friend and I are lost." The women's gestures made it known that she was confused. A pair of icy jade eyes glared at Amy. \ "Is he your mate?" Amy jumped at the thought. ~Adam.and I.mates? What is this crazy world that I live in?~
"Um.no. He's just my friend. We got lost and are trying to find our way back home." The trio did not speak for what felt like forever. Owls filled the skies with their call. The crisp wind blew against their cheeks.
The strange women was the first to speak, "You two are strange indeed." She peered over at the couple hunched over one another, "The girl should be protecting the male or not protecting him at all. If he is not your mate, then why protect him?"
"He is my friend. Just because we are not in love doesn't mean that we still cannot befriend one another. Am I right?" Yet again, the silence filled the night.
"Come with me. You may have strange ways, but that does not forbid you to have sleep in this cold." The women walked forward, clasping Amy's other hand and dragging it her direction. ~Why do I have a bad feeling about this?~ The sky gave her an odd feeling of doubt. What did this stranger have in store for them? Would they be dead by the end of the night? So many questions unanswered. So little with any adequate answers that would satisfy her mind. It is human nature to want answers to life's questions. Curiosity. There was never a greater thirst for those answers of life. And fate.their fate.
