Faded Rainbow
Plunging into the waves of my maturity.
I fight them, trying to get back
to the beach that they pulled me from,
the beach of my childhood.
Undercurrents of experiences
prevent me from beating the waves.
"No!" I cry
I don't want to do this
I don't want to lose that leisurely, carefree life.
But this ocean says that I have to.
I finally give up fighting.
I drift farther and farther out,
clutching only one thing from the beach,
a photograph.
A photograph of my family
from before the storm.
That terrible storm that ripped me away,
into this gigantic ocean.
As I float, I watch the horizon,
fuzzy due to the last drops of the storm.
I see other kids, now adults,
floating and crying.
I sense that I am not as alone as I had thought.
I glance back at the horizon,
searching for my future,
and I see it.
The beginnings of a rainbow
forming in the sky.
It is faded and smeared,
but a rainbow nonetheless.
A smile crosses my lips
and I begin to swim
towards that faded rainbow.
Plunging into the waves of my maturity.
I fight them, trying to get back
to the beach that they pulled me from,
the beach of my childhood.
Undercurrents of experiences
prevent me from beating the waves.
"No!" I cry
I don't want to do this
