StormChild

Note: I wrote a poem a long time ago that ended up filled with phrases and
cadences that I really liked, but overall, it just struck me as wrong. So I
lifted parts of it and reworked it into a completely different story and
meaning. Here's the final product!

I met a little boy once
In the middle of a storm
And told him he should join me
In the search for someplace warm

He gently took his hand from mine
Smiling brightly up at me
And shook his head without a pause
Like I were a child, not he

He said-

"Look, the Sky is falling!
Or else it's Heaven that cries
Listen, the Wind is howling!
See how the Lightning flies!"

I looked and I listened
And I didn't understand
So he shook his head a second time
And asked, clenching one small hand-

"Can you feel the solid Earth trembling?
See the passion with tightly shut eyes?
Or hear distant Thunder rumbling
And know that it's laughter disguised?"

I felt and I heard
But I couldn't break the guise
For I didn't hear the laughter
And saw black behind closed eyes

He seemed to know that I was lost
For he frowned and looked away
When I regretfully announced that I'd
Take sun over rain any day

I could tell he was quite disappointed
But he smiled at me just the same
And it was only when he started to leave
That I thought to ask his name

He grinned and said-

"I laugh with the Stars, who love me
And I sing to the flaming Sun
I am the Child of the ardent Storm
And my business with you is done!"

He danced away, I let him go
And for an instant heard the Rain
Drumming the beat he was dancing to
As the Storm claimed him again

Now, when the bright Day darkens
And the Sky looks like it did then
I look for him, with a shiver and a smile
But I don't think I'll see him again
