A/N: I know, this has taken forever to get written. Sorry! -.- I had a lot of trouble writing this, so it's kinda rushed and not my best. So I need lots of reviews and lovely constructive criticism! :) Thank you!
"Oof." Ella grunted as a flailing Lily landed on her back. Luckily for her, Lily was fairly light; still, Ella lay winded for a few seconds before shoving the girl off her. Lily was panting hard, and when Ella rolled over she could see Lily was red in the face. She glared at Ella and tried to jump at her again, but Ella scooted over and she landed hard on the floor. Ella quickly moved to hold her down.
"OK, you, enough's enough." Ella scowled down at her. "I want answers, and I want them now. Why have you been trying to ruin my life?"
"Your life?" Lily shrieked. She sputtered, at a loss for words. "You – why –you – I can't believe you! Of all the arrogant, ungrateful..." Ella rolled her eyes. Lily sat up suddenly, throwing her off. "You think your life is ruined? I've been working so hard to get you a fairy tale, just like my mother used to tell me-"
"Your mother?" Ella interrupted.
"Yes, my mother." Lily snarled. "I bet you don't know what it's like, to have your mother die just when you need her. I bet –" She stopped, closing her eyes.
"I lost both of my parents, and you know it." Ella said quietly.
Lily's eyes snapped opened, hateful again. "I don't mean as a baby, I mean when you're grown up and you know what it means. My mother used to tell me stories, stories about princes and girls who loved them, stories with happily ever afters. Do you know how much I wished they could happen to me? And do you know how devastated I was when the stories stopped, and I knew they could never start again? Then I met you and I thought, 'If not me, maybe someone else. Maybe I can give someone else a happy ending.'"
Ella snorted. "Yeah, but usually happy endings involve the 'happy' part. What made you think you could force me to love Alfred? Did you think I'd want my dress to be destroyed, or want to be kidnapped?"
At this Lily smiled and shook her head. "Ella dear," she tutted, "you forget. The princess has a big part, indeed, but it's the fairy godmother who gets the spotlight. At least, she was the heroine in my mother's stories. Don't you see? Once you and Alfred are married, I can retire to the sidelines, knowing I have done the ultimate good deed. That will be my happy ending. And don't you agree I deserve it?"
"No, not at all. What you're doing ain't good, it's wicked." Both the girls looked up in surprise. Henry was sitting up and was staring at Lily. "Why can't ya let Ella plan her own life? What if – what if she loved someone else?" Lily grinned wickedly.
Lily grinned wickedly. "Well, well, isn't that sweet. Ella's got herself a boyfriend!" Henry blushed but didn't back down. "To tell you the truth, I hadn't counted on that, but it isn't really important. Once Ella and Alfred are married, you won't be able to do anything about it."
Ella glanced at Lily scornfully. "Lily, you don't get it. Alfred's gone; you can't make me do anything I don't want to. You've lost."
Lily smiled thinly. "Not yet I haven't." She darted over to the bodyguards and pulled something from her pocket. When she held it under their noses, they both sat up immediately. Lily grinned and pointed to Ella and Henry. "Get them!"
Ella and Henry both jumped up, but the bodyguards were faster, and they were soon caught. Just then, the door to the cottage banged open. Mother glowered down at the guards, brandishing a package of meat and a large measuring stick.
"Gentlemen, I'll thank you to unhand my children." Mother boomed. The bodyguards glanced at each other doubtfully. One of them started towards her, and Mother deftly whacked him in the stomach with her stick. He fell over with a loud thud and lay, red-faced and unable to move, on the floor. The other guard backed up against the wall.
"Get her!" Lily shrieked. "Go on! What's the matter with you?" The guard only shook his head, keeping his eyes fixed on the measuring stick as his companion groaned painfully.
"As for you..." Mother strode over to Lily and looked sternly down at her. "I think it's time you went home." Lily took one look at her face and fled. The guards slunk out soon after, the injured one leaning on his companion. Mother wasted no time fetching her salve and setting to work on both the children's bruises.
A few minutes later, a blond head poked around the doorframe. "Excuse me," Alfred said meekly. "Is it safe to come in?"
Mother and Henry both looked to Ella. She sighed, then nodded. "Very well, you can come in. But behave!"
Alfred came in and stood before Ella, looking at the floor. "I saw Lily run away, so I figured I'd come and see what was up. Listen...um..." he scuffed the floor with his foot, then sighed. "Listen, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for everything. I really hope you're not too hurt."
Ella shook her head. "No, I'm fine. I am curious though – why did you do it? Why did you go along with Lily?"
Alfred ducked his head. "It's kind of embarrassing..."
"No, really," Ella insisted. "I want to hear."
"Alright...well, it's, um, I really – I really like to act, and well, there's a man in town who could get me a part with a traveling troupe, but Lily's family knows him and she said if I didn't go along with her she would tell him I wasn't good for the part. So really, what could I do?" Ella rolled her eyes at Henry.
Alfred flushed. "I think I'll be going now," he said mournfully. "I really am sorry though." He turned and went out the door.
"Well!" Mother said. "That was enlightening. So Ella, does that change how you feel about Alfred?" Ella thought for a second.
Ella thought for a second. "Not really," she decided. "He was quite a coward." They sat in silence for a few moments, then Henry turned to face her.
They sat in silence for a few moments, then Henry turned to face her. "Ella," he started, "I was wond'ring; there's a ball in the next village this weekend, and – with Mother's permission, o'course – I thought maybe we could go t'gether?"
Ella started giggling. "Thanks all the same Henry, but I think I've had enough balls to last me a lifetime."
"Well, how 'bout a fair? I hear there's one comin' sometime soon."
Ella smiled at him. "That sounds just perfect."
LE FIN (that's French for "the end")
A/N: Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh! I actually finished a story!! Wow...go me! :) This chapter is a bit rushed and stuffs, cause I was trying to finish it, and the ending is waaaay corny. So any suggestions are, as usual, welcomed. Thanks for sticking with this the whole way through, you guys are great...sniff ;-)
P.S. I was going to work this into the story somehow, but I couldn't find a good place for it, so here it is: In the end, Lily's dad gets wind of what she's been up to and she gets shipped off to finishing school. Hehehe...just desserts, methinks.
Replies to reviews:
Pont: Glad you like it! Yeah, Henry is one of my favorites too. And I loved making Lily...it's so fun to create evil people, don't you think?
Ancamna: Thanks for all your cc, it was helpful even if I didn't follow it. Also thanks for helping me get my ideas onto paper (or screen, or whatever). That's neat about Ella's name. Love ya!
AA: Sorry, I already have a nickname for you. Wow, you sure have a thing for Lily, don't you? I hope you're happy with her fate. If you ask me, being attacked is too good for her. Thanks for putting it on your favs!
Listener: Glad you like the twist. I know what you mean about normal fairy tales, they drive me nuts sometimes. That's why I wrote this! Thanks for reviewing.
