Chapter Three: Concubines in the Beds

I was awoken by the footsteps of a passerby- no; make that two. Muffled voices spoke, and though I would have been able to hear what they said had I actually listened, I didn't even try. It was too early, and I was entirely exhausted. Nevertheless, I swung my feet over the edge of the firm bed, stretching my bare arms as high as I could. I stood up groggily, yawning and walking straight into the bathroom, trying to remain quiet so I wouldn't wake my roommate. I needn't have worried much, though, as Toushi was a very heavy sleeper. I never was, even before Kyo heightened my senses… Almost anything will wake me up nowadays.

I looked into the mirror, calculating my appearance. A deep purple color was entrenched deep under my eyes, signaling lack of sleep. I groaned, pulling out a compact of makeup to try and hide them. Kyo would be upset if he found any flaw in any one of us. We all had to be perfect, for the off chance that he might take one of us in the evening. I had lived here the longest, and, as far as I know, have been with him my entire life. I have no recollection of any other people, besides the other guys living with us. Sometimes Kyo would leave for weeks at a time, leaving us stranded, locked in this beautiful mansion. We were never to leave the house, unless accompanied by Kyo himself.

I walked out of the bathroom, and, looking to my right, noted that Toushi was awake. "Hey," I mumbled to him, nodding slightly, "what's up?"

He yawned, covering his mouth with a pale hand. "Nothing much, you? Did you get any sleep?"

I shook my head. "No, maybe a few hours, but that's it. Can you tell?"

He stood up, resting a hand on my shoulder in order to peer into my eyes. "Hmm…" he said, looking for any sign of insomnia, "no, you did a good job of hiding it."

I nodded. "Alright, cool." I leaned my head on his shoulder, sighing. "God, I'm so tired."

I couldn't see his face, but by now I knew him enough to know he was giving a sympathetic smile. He ran his fingers through my short brown hair, and I heard him sigh softly. "I know, it's awful…"

He wrapped his arms around me, and I reflexively did the same, loving the feel of his bare skin against mine. "I think there's a new one." I said finally after a long period of silence.

"Really? I wonder what his name is." Toushi said thoughtfully.

Already, there were five of us. I wondered how many Kyo would take until his lust could finally be satiated. I guessed that he would never stop, perhaps even getting rid of the older ones when the time came. I reluctantly let go of Toushi when a knock sounded on the door.

I opened it, greeted with the sight of Kyo and an unfamiliar face.

"Kei, Toushi? I'd like you to meet Riyu." Kyo said in his deceptively beautiful voice.

Toushi and I both smiled and introduced ourselves, and they left us to get changed for breakfast. We hurried to get changed, as Kyo hated when his 'slaves', as he called us, were late to anything. We arrived promptly into the kitchen, just as the others came trickling in.

There was Kao, a fiery redhead with sparkling green eyes and a perpetual smirk, Yun, a mild-mannered, soft-spoken intellectual, and Seph, the cold, stony introvert. At seeing Seph, I remembered that he was the only one of us with a room to himself. I wondered if Kyo would put the new kid into his room… Seph never talked to any of us, with the exception of Kyo, and I wasn't sure if it would be a good idea to put a rookie in with him. Most of us thrived on companionship; we were the only ones we could ever hope to see. Thus, we stayed together in necessity. We were all curious as to why Seph was so distant and closed off, but he had made it clear that he didn't want anything to do with us.

Kyo walked in with Riyu draped on one arm. We waited for him to sit before all taking our respective places at the table, eating in utter silence. The minimum of forks and knives clashing against plates was due to Kyo's unpredictable temper. He was known to go off at any time, and we all carefully did our best to stay out of his way. I was the first to find out about this anger, and have almost imperceptible scars on my back and arms from blows received from him. He has whips in his closet, knives under his bed. Us vampires don't scar, mind you, but this was before I was turned. After me, he decided to turn them before bringing them here. He didn't want to risk damaging flawless skin.

So, in essence, I was the guinea pig. Of course, I told Toushi, the first one to come after me, about this temper, and he told the next, and so on. I could have been cruel, letting them figure it out by themselves, but I figured we were all stuck together; we may as well help each other out.

Breakfast finally ended, and we left in silence as the maids cleaned off the table. Toushi and I headed back to our room, waiting until we were safely inside before conversing.

"Where do you think Riyu will be sleeping?" I asked Toushi, tilting my head in slight confusion.

"Tonight? With Kyo, no doubt." He replied.

"Uh, yeah, I know that… I mean, will he have to share a room with Seph?"

"Oh… I don't know… If he does… I feel bad for the poor kid."

Kyo brought me to my new room, so that I could "get acquainted" with my new roommate. He opened the door for me, I smiled, and as I walked in, admiring the new surroundings, the door closed behind me. There was only one bed, a beautiful four-poster with the comfiest-looking blankets covering it I had ever seen. Then a thought registered in my head. One bed? Two of us? Oh well, maybe the guy will be cute.

"Are you lost?" A deep voice called from the corner of the room.

"Wha...?" I exclaimed, twisting my body to see who was talking to me. "No, I… I'm your new roommate…"

"Huh." The voice said, and the figure got up from the shadowed corner. He walked slowly, until he was right in front of me, the dim light barely illuminating his face.

I shivered slightly, watching him just… stand there. It was unnerving, which was odd, as… No one ever gets me unnerved.

"Well… You're handsome, I'll give you that." He said after a long silence.

I gazed coolly at him, regaining some of my confidence. "I know." I said simply before walking past him and sitting on the edge of the bed.

He chuckled. "And cocky…" He wandered towards me, again standing right in front of me. He stared into my eyes with so much intensity that I almost considered moving out of his sight. Those dark eyes were so haunting, so cold… But I stared back defiantly. I wouldn't let this guy push me around.

We continued staring, until his face finally broke into a freakish snarl. He pushed me backwards onto the bed, straddling my chest and kissing me fiercely. Wide-eyed and confused, I just stared at him, until my brain kicked in and told me what was going on.

Very well, then. Two can play at this game.

I kissed back. Not worrying about anything else, I wrapped my arms around his back, pulling him closer, trying to show him that he couldn't control me. Our teeth clashed, biting sporadically, tongues sparring in furious lust. Neither of us would give in to this battle of dominance. I used my fading strength to push him over, and switched positions with him, finally ending our lip's embrace. I glared at him silently before bending over to whisper in his ear, "I think I won."

Anger flashed in his chocolate eyes, and he lunged at me once more, crushing me beneath him on the hard, wood floor. He brought my hands above my head, pinning me, and smirked before leaning in for another kiss. He bit my bottom lip, slowly pulling it outwards and sucking on it before lashing out with his tongue. My tongue enthusiastically met his with a vigorous lick, and I moved my head up instinctively for more. Suddenly the taste of blood mingled with a sharp pain, and I realized he had sunk his fangs into my wandering tongue.

I knew what he was playing at, ignored the intense pain, and brought my mouth to the side of his face, licking upwards and leaving a bloody trail along his flawless skin.

He raised an eyebrow, almost acknowledging me, and smirked again.

"Never assume a win." He said before quickly getting off of me and disappearing.

"What the hell was that about?" I thought before climbing into his—our—bed, and dozing off.
