All Along By: KNE Chapter 2-Subway
--------------------------------------------------------------
It was getting cold, and I was getting restless. Sometimes I wished I had better things to do then wait for my brother. The score was already 2-0, and Clemington was leading. Chris had scored both the goals, boosting his ego up the chart even more. The bleachers were basically filled with fans dressed in red and white (the school colors). I believed they were even more active then the football games, screaming and chanting, "Go Cardinalds!" or "Go Chris!" and of course "DEVON!!!"
I hadn't opened my mouth once. I wasn't the kind of person who had no school spirit, but I just wasn't the person that went all out. I was happy they were winning, especially since they moved Chris to left mid. Sometimes I amazed myself at how smart I was. It was the last quarter, and I was going through my trig homework, quickly writing down answers that were probably wrong. I didn't put much effort since I always got a good grade. That's when I noticed the guy I was sitting next to was staring at me.
At first, I did the normal thing and just ignored it. But I wasn't a normal girl, so I quickly turned my head to stare at him.
"You know it's rude to stare." I said, pulling my sweater around me tighter. I had never seen this person before. He was probably younger or something. He had short curly brown hair, and hazel eyes. He wasn't completely gorgeous like Aiden or Devon, but he was somewhat cute. He reminded me of a Seth character from the OC. Our stare down competition ended when he smiled and then laughed, leaving me confused.
"Sorry." he mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck. I raised an eyebrow.
"Ok?"
"You looked familiar, I couldn't help it. Have we met before?" Ah, the worst pickup line in the book. I snorted and covered my mouth. This time he raised an eyebrow. "What is it?" I just shrugged and turned my attention back to the game. Twenty more minutes and then I would be home. "Is your boyfriend playing or something?" The guy suddenly asked. I turned and looked him.
"What?"
"What are you here for?"
"The game," I said in an 'as-matter-of-fact' tone. He grinned sheepishly.
"For who?" This time I laughed. Why was he asking me so many questions?
"For the Clemington, soccer team of course." I said. We both laughed.
"So you're not use to giving out information?"
"Nah, I'm just not use to guys asking me things."
"I thought you would be." he looked back out to the game as the referee blew the whistle to end the game. I gathered my books, while the fans hurried off the bleachers. "So you're not here for your boyfriend then?" he asked again.
"Nope." I glanced at the kid. He seemed like a nice guy. "Are you a junior?" He shook his head.
"Senior, I'm new this year.." I nodded my head.
"I see." It was starting to get awkward. Hopefully Chris would hurry is butt up so I could get home. I wasn't in the mood to feel out of place, especially in front of a guy.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"Neely," I replied, clapping my hands together.
"Pretty name." I was stunned. Was this supposed to be another charming effect? "It's unusual, but pretty."
"Unusual? I prefer unique," I said. "At least I don't have a common name like Ashley or Brittany."
"You're right..I'm Steven Carmichael," he quickly said, "It's nice to meet you Neely."
"Neely!" I looked up to see Devon heading my way, holding a water bottle and his soccer bag. I raised an eyebrow at him and then turned to Steven.
"Well Steven it was nice talking to you. My ride is here." I stood up and picked up my bag. Steven's eyes traveled from me and Devon.
"I thought you weren't here for your boyfriend," he said quietly. I snorted and looked at Devon who had stopped next to me and was looking down at Steven.
"He's not my boyfriend," I said. "Do you think I would go out with someone like him?" I glanced at Devon who was glaring at me.
"That's a bit harsh, don't you think?" he asked, wiping the sweat from his face. I grinned devilishly. It felt good to just shove Devon's pride up his ass for once.
"Nothing you can handle," I dully replied. "Bye Steven!" I waved goodbye to the kid, and followed Devon towards the parking lot. "Where's Chris?" I asked. Devon ignored me as we reached the car. Was he mad? Devon was a bit different from my brother. Maybe a bit more proper, but I still made fun of the both of them equally, so I wasn't use to Devon's pissed look on his face.
"There's a party at Jason's tonight. He's heading straight there, so I'm dropping you off home first." I rolled my eyes. Typical brother to ditch his sister when the time came.
"Oh." I managed to mumble before shrugging, and smiling at Devon. "Ok then!"
Devon hurried to the driver's side of the car as I lazily opened the passenger side. He reached for his cap and then turned to face me, while starting the car.
"Are you hungry?" he asked. I glanced at him, and shoved my bag under my seat.
"What are you implying?" Devon cranked his body to the right to look at the back window as he pulled out of the parking lot.
"I don't know, I'm just seeing if you wanna stop at Subway or something." he said, finally facing me again.
"Who's paying?" I grinned up at him. Devon groaned and then laughed.
"I am." I leaned back on my seat and stared out the window.
"Alright." To tell you the truth I was happy. A free meal. Anyone would be happy. There I was sitting next to Devon Matthews, my brother's best friend, and we were going to Subway.
We made our stop in front of Subway. I was first out of the car, ready to munch down on something, while Devon slowly took his time to lock the door.
"Slow down!" Devon yelled after me.
"Hurry up!" I shouted back at him, rubbing my cold hands together. I heard Devon grumble a few words before catching up with me.
"Are you that hungry?" he asked.
"Starving!" I felt Devon's hand grip my arm to hold me back. "What?" I asked, stopping to face him.
"Don't do that, you look like an idiot, can you walk next to me for once, instead of act like some barbarian woman?" he asked, beginning to walk again. I frowned and then glanced at Devon.
"Afraid I might ruin your reputation?" I called out, making him stop walking. Geese, all I wanted to do was eat. I had totally forgotten that it was Devon Matthews who would walk through the door with me. If by some chance someone we knew was there, it would go crazy. The excuse of me being Chris's sister would be quite lame as well. Devon turned and faced me.
"What are you talking about Neely?" I ignored him and pushed passed him. "Neely! What are you bitching about now?" Devon chased after me.
"Nothing, now lets get our food," I muttered, pushing through the front doors. Thankfully we were alone, besides the Asian girl who stood behind the counter. I ordered my usual: white bread, turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise. Plain but perfect combination. I stopped at the cash register and watched as Devon made his order, and then walked to my side, while the Asian girl faced us.
"That'll be $10.75," she said, handing us our food in the bag. I reached for my wallet, while Devon pulled his from his pocket.
"What are you doing Neely?" he asked, as I pulled out a five dollar bill.
"What does it look like I'm doing?" I asked, glaring at him.
"I'm paying for it."
"I'm paying for my half," I stated, showing him the money in my hand. The Asian girl giggled and looked at Devon. Devon stared down at me making me feel nervous. I had just did something that pissed him off. "Do you want me to pay for yours too?" I piped, up before he glanced back, and handed the girl the money. I stood aside and watched as he received the change. He grabbed the bag from the counter and headed towards the tables, ignoring me. What did I do?
I followed him and quietly sat down, feeling a bit uneasy at the way Devon didn't even look at me. Geese, we weren't even dating and it looked like we were getting into a fight. I took my seat and looked at Devon.
"What the hell is your problem!" Devon finally hissed. My jaw dropped and I gaped at him.
"My problem? And just what the hell did I do to you?" Devon swallowed and glanced back at the cash register. I looked at him and shook my head.
"So shoot me, just because I wanted to pay for my own food." I grabbed the Subway bag and took out my sub.
"That's not the point."
"And what exactly is?"
"It's embarrassing for me! I walk in here with a girl, and she's going to pay for it? Don't you think I have any dignity? That girl was laughing at us. At me!" I froze, my heart beginning to thump, while Devon stared intensely back at me. And then.I burst out laughing.
"Oh my god! Dev, that's hilarious!" I said, hitting the table with my fist. I could still feel Devon still staring at me, while I wiped the tears from my eyes. "Gosh Dev, I never knew you even had dignity. C'mon, you can be formal and pay for you girlfriend's food, but it's just me Devon. Don't get all worked up over it. I'm not like those girls, and we're not dating so you don't have to worry about paying." I laughed on. "Think of this as a lesson if you take any other girls out. Only girls you care about you pay for."
I laughed on until I saw Devon's dead serious face. I shut up immediately, and licked my lips.
"Neely, this is so you. You can't take anything serious for once."
"Devon, I'm sorry okay? It's not a big deal, you can pay for my next meal then," I said. Devon shook his head and grabbed the bag. I watched as he headed towards the door, "I'm eating in the car." I heard him mumble.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------
I gripped the coke in my hand and walked slowly towards the car. I could see Devon's head from where I was walking. Hopefully, he had cooled down. Maybe he was just having a bad day. Only once in a while he would really mad, but today he was mad enough to even start a fight with her. Maybe it was mostly her fault, but he had been pretty moody since the soccer game. I came up to the passenger side and knocked on the window.
"Can I come in?" I asked in a pleasant voice. Devon looked up at me and then unlocked the door. I took my seat and then faced him. "Dev.what's wrong?" I asked sincerely. I searched his eyes but found nothing. He did look a bit upset. "Was it all my fault? I'm really sorry." I clasped my hands together. "I didn't mean to do what I did.I just thought."
"It's not all your fault Neely, so don't worry about it." Devon said quietly looking straight ahead at the green car parked in front of us. I closed my mouth and leaned back in the chair, quite confused. So what was bothering him?
"But I am worried." I continued. "Cuz if you don't act right, then Chris won't act right, and then if Chris doesn't act right, I don't act right.it's a chain of horrifying events after that, Devon. The story will get complex." I saw it. The little smile that formed on Devon's face before it quickly disappeared again. "What's eating you?" Devon looked at me and then sighed.
"Neely." he started. I cocked my head to listen. "Am I the kind of guy girls like you would date?" he asked. Now THAT, threw me off. My eyes widened and shifted in my seat. So it was a GIRL problem. I smiled.
"W..What are you asking?"
"Would you date a guy like me?" he asked again. I leaned in and brought a hand to my temple. Such a hard question. I was expecting him to mope over a grade, or more important things. But he was asking me, about a girl. That made me feel just.great. It took a minute for me to answer.
"No."
Shocking, but yes..I said no, and I said it with such a serious face that I saw the hurt in Devon's eyes immediately.
"I see." he said, turning towards the wheel. He was really upset about this girl. I smiled.
"But that's because that's me. But I'm sure the mystery girl that you want to ask to the winter dance will see the sweet side of you, and she'll fall for your blue eyes..because they are quite amazing. And she'll say yes because you're a really nice person, and you care about your dignity, and of course HER dignity. She'll say yes because you don't cheat, you're fun to be around, and you're good at video games. She'll say yes because you're not exactly dumb, your athletic, and because you are somewhat attractive. So don't worry Devon, a girl wouldn't give up a chance to go out with you. You're a perfect score."
I clapped my hands together and turned towards my window just as Devon whipped around to face me. All my praising that I just did now, had better cheered him up. I glanced back at him to see him staring at me with wide eyes, making me blush. I covered my face and laughed.
"Neely." he started.
"Hm?"
"Thanks." I looked at him to see him smiling at me. "But how do you know about the mystery girl?" he asked. I laughed.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" This time Devon blushed and he started the car. " So who is she?" I asked, pushing into the subject.
"None of your business."
"She must be great.if you were this upset over her," I said, giggling. Devon looked over at me and smiled.
"Yeah.she really is," he whispered. I clapped a hand over my mouth and gasped.
"Devon Matthews.are you in love with her?" I asked, leaning in closer to him. Devon blushed a darker shade and I laughed louder.
"Neely Donovan, why are you so nosy?" He asked, poking the tip of my nose. I sat back and rubbed it.
"Well Chris doesn't even know who it is. You've been wanting to ask this girl to every dance since freshman year. I'm curious to know which girl has influenced you so much."
"Well."
"Are you going to ask her this year?" I asked, inching closer again with a big smile on my face. "Are you?"
"I don't know."
"Why are you so scared? You've dated before moron, just ask her!"
"It's not that easy!"
"It's not like you've never done it before! You asked Amy Kutcher out, and what about that one blonde girl with the weird eyes. Or Samantha Dones!" I looked at the passing houses as I yelled at him the name of the girls he had dated.
"But this girl is different from them!!" We pulled into my driveway and I stared at him.
"Oh my god." I squeaked, looking at him. Devon stared back at me confused.
"What?"
"My little Devon."I started.
"What?"
"You're growing up! You're actually growing up! You're finally liking someone who's not a skank! Oh god!" I pretended to cry, and opened the door, just in enough time to dodge Devon's knuckle head. I laughed and looked back down at him from the window. "Good luck Devon."
I turned away and walked towards my front door. So who the hell was this girl? I had to admit, even I was curious.
Review, I hope you like it! I have now introduced.Steven Carmichael. He will be another character that maybe some of you might like. Love triangles (or squares) are forming now. Tell me what you guys think!
