To Be Alone

All I want to do tonight is sleep

I want the harshness of nightmares

and the joyfulness of dreams

to creep into my mind

and let me surrender to loneliness tonight.

I want my legs to curl

around myself

and let fools lie

alone

with me

tonight.

I want my cat

long silenced

to howl at the moon like he used to

and fold himself up at my side

keeping me warm.

I want to let my hair down

to sleep

with my curls around my cheeks

like I did when I was a child.

I want the night

and the silence

of moonlight

and midnight.

I want my hands to be free of words

and my heart to be free of you.
