Chapter 1:
Chloe was on her way to visit her Grandmother, who owned farmland in Virginia. She had stables brimmed with horses. Most of the horses were owned by wealthy people, who paid for their horses to live there and be cared for when they didn't have the time. Chloe and her mother would stay at the cozy little cottage during the summer every year since the accident. She loved horses with a passion and couldn't wait till the end of the school year to visit.
Chloe was a normal, seventeen year old going into her senior year of high school. She and her mother, Claire, resided in Raleigh, North Carolina. She went to Brimwood High, one of the ritziest schools in the state. Chloe hated it; she didn't fit in anywhere and was singled out because she wasn't wealthy like the other students. Chloe was not a plain girl at all. She was very pretty, blonde hair and bright blue eyes, exactly like her mother. Her complexion was fair and body slim.
Ever since the death of her father, her mother and her moved into a small apartment complex close to the school. Mr. Stephens died in a freak car accident three years ago; Chloe still hadn't fully recovered from the shock. Her disposition had changed into a weary one; tired of being bothered at school and then her father gone. For a teenager these two things are frustrating, but when they happen at the same time it's very overwhelming. This is how Chloe felt and this is why she loved getting away from it and staying with her Grandmother. If she had a choice she would live there for good.
In the car, her mom was singing along to a Barry Manilow CD. Chloe cringed and made irritated faces. Her mother sang along to 'Mandy' and that was the last straw for Chloe. She turned the knob, shutting it off. "Chloe! I was listening to that!" Her mother yelled.
"It's crap mom! He's so old and just.ewww!" She whined.
"Young lady I'm getting tired of your little tantrums and your attitude. Shape up!" Her mother scolded as she turned the knob, turning her CD back on. Chloe slumped in her chair and groaned. "Your music is just as toxic to my ears as well. I can't see how you listen to the rock music. You can't even understand what their singing; oh, excuse me screaming." Chloe sighed.
"That's what I like alright! Just leave me alone." She covered her hands over her ears and shut her eyes. Her mother sighed loudly and then continued her sing along. Chloe had managed to fall asleep. So, four hours and five Barry Manilow CD's later they arrived at her Grandmother's.
"Chloe, we're here!" Claire shook her awake.
"Hmmm? Wha?" Chloe rubbed her eyes and smiled at the sight of the little cottage in front of her. "Yes! Finally!" Her mother only smiled and they got out. Before they went inside, Claire grabbed her daughter and hugged her from the back. "Ack! Mom!"
"Do you still love me?" She whimpered and pouted her lip out.
"Of course I do." Chloe sighed, "Now will you let me go?" Her mom let her grip go and Chloe raced out to the stables.
"Chloe! Help me unpack! Ugh..that girl."
Chloe ran into the stables to see her favorite horse, Mystic, she had named her. She was her horse; the one her Grandma promised to give her when she felt was the right time. Mystic was pure white and sparkled in the sunlight. Chloe ran directly to her stall only to find it empty. "Mystic! Where are you girl?" She ran up and down the hall, looking into every stall. With tears in her eyes, Chloe sprinted back to the cottage. She burst into the house, tears running down her face. "Grandma, where's Mystic?!"
