Flying Half Mast

I walked outside today

And I saw the flags.

The national flag

And then the state flag.

Immobile without a breeze.

Water shimmering on the cloth.

Today they were flying half mast.

I was cut down to size that day.

And I realized the weight of the world.

One life,

One death.

What all that can mean.

And the water on the cloth

Reminds me of tears on a face.

Are they crying?

Crying for the soldiers they lost.

Crying for the ones who were killed.

Crying . . .

Mourning . . .

Weeping . . .

Grieving . . .

I walked outside today

And I saw the flags.

The national flag

And then the state flag.

My heart, immobile with grief.

Tears shimmering on my cheek.

Today, I am flying half mast.
