AUTHOR'S NOTE - A requiem for three characters who were murdered in my WWII series "The Flying Adventures of Captain Goldcat".

Sittin' all alone on my mustang wing

Alone in the dark; the crickets begin to sing

a sweet little lulluby

and I almost cry.

How did the world I loved so tender

could be tossed astray and torn asunder.

Oh how could I have let it get this far

in this bloody second world war.

Sittin' on the wing of my mustang crying

I'm thinkin' of my friends who were lying

cradled in my arms with one last breath

as they faded from life and into death.

I don't think I'll ever forget what they said

when they recieved their fatal slice of lead.

"Keep on movin'; don't ever let down.

Bury those Nazis six feet under ground."

Sittin' on my mustang wing how can I forget

The day that Jackson and I first met.

He was a private and I was a lieutenant

yet our friendship remained so consistent.

Just a few days before, I had joined his Rangers

To take on Italy and all the dangers.

Well the Nazi I was a tracking and a huntin

Had on his mind his own way of guttin'

In order to get to me he gunned Jackson down

With a fatal slice, he went without a sound.

I will never forget how much Jackson meant

He was an angel that God himself had sent.

Oh I cry and I cry each and every day

I get on my hands and knees to pray.

"Bring back my brothers; the ones I love so dear;

I cannot stand alone in this world so full of fear."

A few days later I got myself a mentor

With ol' Harvey the mission was always center.

I learned a lot from this great man.

I never thought I'd have to bury him in this land.

Harvey was murdered in the bare forests of Bastogne

When a Nazi seeker caught him on his own

Harvey wouldn't compromisethe mission no way

So the Nazi devil took his life away.

Oh I cry and I cry each and every day

I lower my head and begin to pray,

"Oh why couldn't I have been there the other day

To stop the Nazis from taking my brother away."

Well it wasn't a few months after,

when our Allies had gotten just a bit dafter.

Eddie was keen to the Luftwaffe ways;

but he was ignored; they looked away.

They sent him on a recon run,

hoping that the Luftwaffe had all but gone.

Well it doesn't take a genius to know how this goes;

Eddie fought only to find defeat from his foes.

And wouldn't you guess I have something more?

He had someone he was fighting for.

He had knelt on one knee just the other day

We were going to get married, I was his fiancee.

Oh I cry and I cry almost every day.

With my head in my hands I begin to pray,

"If good men like the ones that before me have faded

How can we keep this world free and not jaded?"

Sittin' all alone on my mustang wing.

The sun is risin' and the birds begin to sing.

It's a brand new day full of unrelenting forward;

I must hold my head and keep pushing onward.

Even though my brothers are all gone,

in my heart they're brighter than the sun.

And with them I'll fly.

And we'll go flying forevermore;

To know darkness will be nevermore.

Higher and higher,

pull my mustang higher (oh yeah).

Higher and higher,

pull my mustang higher (oh yeah).

Sittin' all alone on my mustang wing

Someone touches my hand and we begin to sing...

AUTHOR'S NOTE - For all those who made it this far, thank you. I had to write about the parting of two characters and finally was able to finish at around 2am or so and for all those who have ever written off a character, you know how difficult it is. And for those who have not, you cannot imagine what it is like.
