I heard it in your voice

when you said your words

the question that I asked

seemed then so unheard

When you lifted your eyes

I saw clearly what was meant

that it meant far from nothing

but not close enough to anything,

the time that we spent.

It could have been your manner

that had me so distraught,

but it was that look in your eyes,

that lilt in your voice,

that brought my heart to a hault.

Fear and disbelief clouded what

I thought I knew.

The feeling of innocence

was gone when entertwined with you.

A sigh,

a sideways glance,

a small gesture to show that you cared,

all that consumed us was silence,

at one another we stared.
