CHAPTER 1

"Has it really been so long?" Kate smiled at her friend, Lisa hadn't changed a bit.

" Five years, wow!"

"Yeh" Kate replied. "I've missed you. How's Steve?" she asked, she had known from the letter she had received from her friend that Lisa had a new boyfriend, apparently he was 'the one'. Kate just hoped he was better than Liam who Lisa had found cheating on her with some cheerleader.
"Oh, fine." Her friend said answering her question. "He's waiting in the car outside, come on."

Kate followed her enthusiastic friend out of the airport. She was really glad her parents had decided to let her come back. She had stayed in touch by letter and phone calls but it wasn't the same. Lisa still had a week left at school because her school got out later than Kate's but after that she had a whole month of fun with her best friend. When she reached the car she had a chance to inspect Lisa's new boyfriend. He was a typically handsome, blond haired, blue eyed, tanned but a little short. "Do I pass the inspection? Am I good enough for Lisa?" he said when he noticed her looking. Kate blushed slightly but smiled. "You'll do." She said as she climbed in.
"Well, thank you." He said starting up the car while Lisa got in laughing at them. "Come on" she said "lets not waste the day at the airport." And they sped away.

Kate settled down in the secretary's office on Monday. She would be there for the week and earn some chump change. It was mainly to keep her busy and Miss Kamp, the secretary, was glad for the help.
She heard a knock on the door, "Come in." she said in her best secretary voice. The door opened and a boy her own age walked in. The first thing she noticed was his blue eyes, she noticed them mainly because his eyes were so bright and his hair was so dark. His hair was a plain black and his eyes seemed to change from grey/blue to bright blue to practically navy in the shifting light in the office. She shook herself to stop herself staring. Other than his eyes he was pretty plain. He was wearing a plain jacket and jeans.
"Yes?" Kate asked still using her secretary voice. "Hi," he replied smiling, "I came about the job," he put a piece of paper on the table, it was an add for a janitors job. Kate looked in the files like she had been told until she found what she was looking for.

"Sorry, the job's been filled."

"That's ok." he said and started to head out the door.

"Wait," Kate said, dropping her secretary voice, after all her was kind of cute, "leave your name and number and maybe you'll get contacted if there's another job open." He smiled "Well my name's Kevin, but I don't have a phone right now."

"Well…." Kate was interrupted when Mr Jefferson, the councillor , came in.

"Hi, I'm looking for Miss Kamp."

"She just stepped out , she'll be back in a minute."

"Kate, Kate Thomson. My it's been a long time, how are you?"

Kate smiled despite being a little old, every body liked Mr Jefferson.

"I'm fine, I'm just back for a holiday."

"I'm glad to hear it. Well I'll look for Miss Kamp later, it's nice seeing you again." and Mr Jefferson went out of the office. Kate turned back to Kevin and was about to speak when she caught the look of pure hatred on his face as he lookfed at the door that Mr Jefferson closed behind him.

"Mmmm, Kevin?" but he acted like he didn't hear her and started walking towards the door. "Thanks." he said without turning around and left.
